Critically-acclaimed writer, director, and producer James Cameron has confirmed that he decided to push back the release of “Avatar 2” from December 2017 to December 2018 because he does not want the sequel to the most successful film in history to go up against “Star Wars Episode 8.”
In a recent interview, Cameron said that his original plan was to release the four “Avatar” sequels a year apart but he decided to open that up.
He admitted that if for no other reason, he just does not want to land on the same date as one of the “Star Wars” sequels.
Cameron added that he does not want to go head-to-head with “Star Wars” because that would be stupid. He said that he hopes that “Star Wars” also won’t go head-to-head with them, reports the Parent Herald.
“Avatar” may be the most successful film in history but “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which was shown in worldwide theaters in December last year, went on to become the third most successful movie of all time.
Thus, pitting “Avatar 2” and “Star Wars Episode 8” would not make sense at all since both films will be vying to become the most successful movie of all time and seeing them clash at the box office would really have a telling impact on their box-office results.
Cameron also said that having the two potential blockbusters clashing at the box office is fair for the two movies. He even jested that it is not just fair it is just good business, reports the Ecumenical News.
The other main reason
Although he is not saying it officially as one of the other main reason why he decided to push back the release date of “Avatar 2,” but James Cameron and Disney sort of come to terms with it when he announced during the CinemaCon in May that Disney has given the franchise a new theme park called “Pandora: The World of Avatar,” which is going to be part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
In addition to the objective of entertaining kids, the theme park is also meant to make people remember what “Avatar” is, which would be crucial when the first sequel finally arrives in theaters in 2018 or some nine years after the first movie came out.
Disney has teased that the new “Avatar” theme park will open next year in time for the entertainment conglomerate’s “Awaken Summer” event.
The company also showcased a revealing new video that gives people a glimpse at just how far the effects have evolved since the release of the world’s most successful film of all time in the box-office back in 2009.
Not a big deal at all
The push back in the release date of “Avatar 2” may be a big issue to fans, who have been waiting for the sequel to the most successful film in history, but it is not a big deal to James Cameron.
For Cameron, the release date of the movie is not as important as its storyline, its setting, and photography. The director is not the type who makes a big fuss about making it on time or beating deadlines. Because for him, coming up with a quality movie is what’s important.
That has been his trademark and his success as a filmmaker is very obvious with “Avatar” and “Titanic” which happen to be the top two highest grossing movies of all time.
“Avatar 2” shall focus on familial and imprisonment themes, says James Cameron. He said that the movie shall be set several years after the original film, when the human-turned Avatar Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, becomes the tribal chieftain, while his wife Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, becomes the high priestess.
According to latest reports, the next “Avatar” film will feature whole new worlds, habitats, and cultures, which could possibly mean that the rumored new alien species will appear in the second installment.
