Elmore said that the involvement of the Navy was a big factor for her agreeing to join the show. The storyline resonated with her because her brother was in the Navy. It was an interesting way to show a story from the Navy’s perspective. At the same time, Alisha’s character is also a mystery to solve.
In preparing for the role, Elmore almost fit in perfectly. The pilot was filmed in a naval base in San Diego so everybody was really feeling that military vibe. The background actors were real Navy men. They also consulted with a lot of people including real Navy captains and lieutenants. Elmore said the introduction helped them because it gave them an idea on how to correctly portray their characters. However, their biggest struggle was about the words and codes Navy officers use. At first Elmore found it difficult to adjust but she eventually learned what everything meant.
In terms of shooting on the actual naval location, Elmore said she would prefer it that way. Though the crew also shoots on a soundstage, it is better to get in touch with the real environment. Elmore added, she still enjoys having a balance of both. Being on the set helps them move freely because there is less crowd.
Elmore also said that the entire crew is working very well with each other. She added that the producers and the writers are always on the set with them. The setup helps them because they can consult the writers if they want to clarify anything about their roles. “The Last Ship” Season 2 finale will air on September 6.
