All films center on The Expendables, a group of mercenaries who carry out a variety of missions, and their action adventures that come along with it. Each film serves as a tribute to the blockbuster action films of the 1980s and 90s and also pays homage to action stars of those decades and the years after that.
The first film was released in 2010 while its follow-up movie hit theaters in 2012. The third film was released in 2014. Rumors are rife that the next film will be coming to theaters by next year to follow the two-year gap of every film.
At the time of the second film, Millennium Films have announced that they are coming up with an all-female version of the film and plans to name it “The Expendabelles.” Reports say the studio has tapped actresses Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz, and Milla Jovovich to star in the movie.
The franchise drew a large fan base and proved to be a box office success, having earned nearly $800 million in global box office. The first film earned approximately $274.5 million while its sequel boasts $311.9 million in sales. The third film earned $206.2 million, which was the lowest in the franchise.
