Season 3 of the British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” is already set to air on May 1 on Showtime and based on the promotional photos and the show’s official trailer, it will focus on the uncanny, albeit eerie, side of Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, and the other main characters.
The official trailer of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 is titled “Embrace Your Dark Side” which means that in addition to Vanessa, the other members of the gothic gang including Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Hartnett; Sir Malcolm Murray, played by Timothy Dalton; Victor Frankenstein, played by Harry Treadaway, will also show their eerie sides.
There is also Dorian Gray, played by Reeve Carney, and Lily Frankenstein, played by Billie Piper, who seems ready to become the main villains of the third season.
And then there is the Creature, played by Rory Kinnear, who was last seen sailing through icy waters to get away from it all. He was shown in the Season 3 trailer so it means that he is going to be back and possibly take his revenge not on Victor, but on Lily and Dorian.
A new series regular
In addition to the main cast of characters, a new series regular will also be joining the third season of “Penny Dreadful” in the person of Patti LuPone, who shall be taking on the role of American psychiatrist Dr. Seward, reports Comicbook.com.
She will be treating Vanessa with an unconventional new approach. In fact, the first photo of Season 3 released late last year showed Dr. Seward comforting Vanessa wearing a straight jacket and in a padded room, which appears to be an asylum. The actress was a guest star during Season 2 where she took on the role of the Cut-Wife.
Latest reports also indicate that the cast of characters will all be moving from London to America in Season 3 and expand the terror they bring along across the US, notes Breathecast.
In the teasers for Season 3, Vanessa was shown telling herself that she has been touched by Satan. On the other hand, following a blood-splattered love scene with a woman, Ethan is seen telling himself that he is made for the dark and appears to be ready to continue with his evil deeds.
Evolving as new villains
During the Season 2 finale of “Penny Dreadful,” Victor Frankenstein expressed his romantic feelings to Lily only to be spurned by the latter.
When Victor tried to get Lily from Dorian Gray by stabbing him, he eventually discovered that Dorian cannot be killed as he is immortal and so is his creation, Lily, which turned out to be the true Frankenstein monster
While there have been rumors and speculations that the show’s lead protagonist in the person of Vanessa Ives will be up against new villains in Season 3, there are also reports going around that the third season will see Dorian Gray and Lily Frankenstein evolving as the show’s new villains.
The speculations are also rife saying that the two are planning to show the world what being evil is all about, which is what Lily mentioned in her last statement, as she and Dorian danced in the ballroom while soaked in their own blood.
Much of the first two seasons of “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime was filmed in Dublin, Ireland. But in the show, the setting was being projected as the London in the early 1800s.
However, for the upcoming third season of the popular TV series, a new location has been confirmed and it is no other than the city of Almeria in Andalusia, Spain. But instead of projecting it as a European location, it will actually depict the American West of the 1800s.
