The first official trailer of Season 6 of “Game of Thrones” came out on March 15 on HBO and less than 24 hours later, it made it to the record books.
The trailer got 30 million views online in less than 24 hours after it came out officially on HBO. It got 8 million views on YouTube and a jaw-dropping 22 million views on the TV show’s Facebook page, reports Variety.
The remarkable viewing figure on the TV series’ trailer only indicates the global anticipation on the Season 6 premiere of “Game of Thrones” which shall happen on HBO on April 24.
The 30 million views on the Season 6 trailer of “Game of Thrones” in less than 24 hours is actually three million higher than the 27 million views recorded by the official trailer of Season 5 of the TV series when it came out last year.
An even better season
The immense popularity of “Game of Thrones” is very evident in its viewership figures and many critics believe that the show could actually outdo its record-breaking fifth season last year.
“Game of Thrones” Season 5 averaged 20.2 million viewers per episode, counting streaming, DVR playback, and repeats.
It is a remarkable figure and ratings for a TV series that is already in its fifth season. Most TV series suffer a decline in viewership right after the second or third season but in the case of “Game of Thrones,” it gets higher and higher every year.
In fact, many are saying that Season 6 could very well top the figure of Season 5. The number of views of its official trailer is already an indication of only the positive things for the show when it finally returns to the small screen on April 24, or a little over a month from now.
In addition, the production has also instituted tougher security measures so that no episode of Season 6 could leak and be pirated before its air date, which means massive viewership records again for “Game of Thrones.”
Battles in Westeros
The show’s official trailer did show the body of Jon Snow, splattered on the snow but it did not show whether he will return alive or not.
It also hinted of more massive battles in Westeros and beyond the Wall. The teaser also showed the fates of some of the TV series’ most popular characters other than Jon Snow, including Daenerys, Arya Stark, Bran Stark, Sansa Stark, Cersei, Tommen, and Jamie Lannister.
While there are talks that “Game of Thrones” could end after Season 8, its viewership figures, assuming it continues through to the eighth season, would make the producers and HBO to really think about extending the show’s run.
Season 6 promises to be one of the most exciting for “Game of Thrones” since nobody knows what will happen as fans do not have a source for spoilers, particularly the sixth book entitled “The Winds of Winter” from “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novel series of critically-acclaimed author George R.R. Martin, notes Popsugar.
The biggest cliffhanger for Season 6 of “Game of Thrones” immediately after the Season 5 finale last year was whether Jon Snow, played by Kit Harrington, is dead or alive after being stabbed multiple times by his brothers in the Night Watch.
With no “The Winds of Winter” to provide the spoilers, fans and viewers were actually left second-guessing, basing their theories on leaked photos of images from the set or from unreliable second-hand information on the internet.
There are also assumptions that since actor Kit Harrington has been renewed for his Season 6 contract with the show, it is almost sure that his character will be back.
It seems likely that Jon Snow will indeed be back in Season 6 of “Game of Thrones” as he will be working on redeeming the legacy of Ned Stark and take back Winterfell from the Boltons.
