Cooling Pillows: Benefits for Your Health

Trying to fall asleep in a room which is too hot or too cold can result in a restless night which can lead to symptoms of sleep deprivation if sleeping conditions are not ideal over many consecutive nights.  Sleep deprivation is accompanied by a whole host of adverse effects which range from impaired cognitive ability to weight gain.  Therefore, getting enough sleep is key to a healthy mind and body.

This is why doctors such as Dr Christopher Winter, a medical doctor at Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, are encouraging people to invest in cooling sheets and cooling pillows.  Dr Christopher Winter states that the ideal temperature of a bedroom is between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 19 degrees Celsius) and, he goes on to state, temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius) and below 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius) can result in a disturbed night of sleep.

The science which backs this statement is fairly straight forward.  The body’s core temperature naturally fluctuates throughout the day.  For most people, the body is at its coolest at around 5am and at its warmest early in the afternoon.  The body cools down as it readies itself for sleep and the faster the body cools down, the faster it will be able to fall asleep.  A cooling pillow simply speeds up the body’s natural fluctuations to encourage, and maintain, sleep.  The health benefits of using a cooling pillow, and sleeping in a cool room, has numerous benefits which stem further than just getting more sleep.
