This amusing animated movie was one of the most profitable in 2016. This Disney’s adventure earned more than $1 billion at the box office, and from that moment it was obvious that Zootopia 2 is inevitable. What we all want to know is – when will it arrive?
Disney probably never expected for this movie to achieve such a success, but it became a film that breaks box-office records and gets high praise from critics. The biggest part of this movie’s success is due to its metaphorical management of prejudice in life, of issues like discrimination and racism. Thanks to this, the film has become the second highest grossing original film of all time (the first is Avatar, of course).
As we followed the adorable and optimistic rookie officer Judy Hoops, who is struggling with being a police bunny, we got to know a smooth, swift-talking hustler Nick Wilde who stole hearts of audiences worldwide, and we saw the couple solve the mystery case that troubled Judy. This story is so perfect, so nuanced, that we were surprised it came from Disney.
Well, it has been more than a year since Zootopia premiered, and Disney is yet to officially announce the premiere date for Zootopia 2, but this animated comedy action/adventure can be expected to be released Spring/Summer 2018.
How do we know this? After being silent on the topic for months, actor Mark Smith, who borrowed his voice to Officer McHorn aka Rhino in Zootopia recently gave us some major details about the sequel. And, since we were starting to get desperate because Disney gave us no news on this topic, any info is welcome.
According to Smith, it has been confirmed that he will reprise his role in Zootopia 2. So, if this is correct, most of the original cast will be coming back for the sequel.
We know Ginnifer Goodwin who voiced Judy is ready for the sequel, and she even spoke about her hopes for the plot “You and I know what happens at the end of the movie, and I would like them to along on this adventure in their new roles. But because they are playing new roles, I would also like to see Nick (Wilde) have to be the one to convince Judy (Hopps) that the world is worth fighting for.”
We have to be honest, it would be immensely interesting to see these two flip roles, also, we are curious – what could make officer Hopps lose her faith?
On the other hand, Jason Bateman, who gave voice to Nick, said that he will do it again, and then said something about the plot that might just be a spoiler “The two of us, kicking ass out there. Cleaning up the streets. We’re a couple of new cops out there. So, bad guys, be warned.”
Next, to Rhino, we expect that Chief Bogo (Idris Elba), Flash the Sloth ( Raymond S. Persi), Officer Benjamin Clawhauser (Nate Torrence) and Major Lionheart (J.K. Simmons) will reprise their respective roles.
Unfortunately, no news leaked about whether these two will develop a romantic relationship in the sequel, and fans are divided on this – some think it is a logical next step, while others are convinced that their relationship should be platonic.
Even there are no news on this subject, we think that movie directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore gave a hint that says it all. When asked about Wilde and Hopps and their potential relationship, Moore said “Do male and female characters always have to get together at the end of every movie? Can’t they just stay best friends?”
On the other hand, people can change their minds, so there still might be time for this love story to happen, as a tale about Judy’s and Nick’s growing romantic feelings for each other and their fear of the social stigma of being an “interspecies” couple just might be an interesting direction for the sequel.
Whatever happens, we expect that the sequel will keep shining the spotlight on social issues. And if done right, it might become one of the most influential animated franchises in history.
Since Disney is currently focusing on Wreck It Ralph 2 and Frozen 2, and an entire plethora of live-action remakes of their old classics, we have a feeling that we might wait a while longer.
When you look at the list of upcoming Disney movies, it’s easy to connect the dots – Coco 2017, A Wrinkle in Time, Mulan, Wreck-It Ralph 2, and Mary Poppins Returns 2018, The Lion King, Frozen 2, Indiana Jones 5 and Gigantic 2020. With all of this in mind, the most realistic date for Zootopia 2 is Spring 2021.
