Viola Davis Wins The BAFTA Beating Naomie Harris. La La Land Wins Five Awards, Including Best Picture. Can Davis Be Compared To Meryl Streep?

While La La Land had a disappointing Oscar, being snatched off their Best Film award by Moonlight, experts believe that the movie will rule the BAFTA. The British Academy Film Awards will see La La Land leading with 11 nominations.

La La Land has already created history with 14 Oscar nominations, which is the highest nomination by any film. The film became the first musical to get so many nominations. La La Land competed for the best film category with Arrival, Moonlight, Manchester By The Sea and I, Daniel Blake.

La La Land finally went on to win the Best Film Award at the 70th BAFTA. The film picked up five awards from the 11 nominations, including Best Director by Damien Chazelle and Best Actress by Emma Stone.

This year’s BAFTA saw the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in attendance. Duke of Cambridge, William, has been the President of the British Academy of Films since 2010 and this was the first time that the couple attended the ceremony.

The BAFTA took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London and saw the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge meeting actors like Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, Ryan Gosling and other Hollywood A-listers.

The Oscars were an exciting affair this year. Viola Davis had her third nomination for her role in Fences. Davis was nominated for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Rose Lee Maxson in Fences.

Davis started her Hollywood career with Doubt, for which she earned her first Oscar nomination. Ebony reported that Viola Davis is from Juilliard and first came into limelight with her role in the production of King Hedley II. She won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in the production.

Davis is known for her power-packed performance in each of her roles. She made a mark with her role in The Help and How to Get Away with Murder. She created history by becoming the first actress to win an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony. While Whoopi Goldberg also has the same, she won a Tony for producing.

It is interesting to note that Viola Davis is also the only woman to have won an Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG Award, Tony and now the BAFTA. Viola Davis won the BAFTA and said that she felt good after receiving the award. Davis added that it wasn’t her style to bask in the glory of the award.

ITV that she would have a drink and eat something to celebrate the win and then move on. Davis has repeatedly been compared to Meryl Streep. Streep has an outstanding long career and has over 20 Oscar nominations, and it is no doubt that Davis is already compared with her given her performances and record nominations in the first few years of her career.

Can Brit Naomie Harris (‘Moonlight’) challenge Viola Davis (‘Fences’)

It was thought that former Bond girl, Naomie Harris might have a shot at the Best Actress in A Supporting Role category, but Davis had already carved her name on the award given her spectacular performance in the Fences.

Naomie Harris was nominated for her role as Paula in Moonlight. The 40-year-old actress was present at the award ceremony and looked good in her Gucci ensemble. She wore a quirky outfit and walked the red carpet.

Harris wore a light pink plunging top with an oversized flower on the front. The gown that Naomie Harris won the BAFTA is very different from her usual style, but it did make the right mark.
