The success of “The LEGO Movie” shown in 2014 will not just result in a sequel but actually four offshoot films which will hit theaters from 2017 to 2019.
These four LEGO films, which shall expand the brick universe or simply called as brick-verse that was started by “The LEGO Movie,” include “LEGO Batman,” “Ninjago,” “The LEGO Movie Sequel” and the “Billion Brick Race.” Only the title of the fourth movie is tentative at this point in time.
All four movies already have their respective playdates on cinemas beginning with the “LEGO Batman” on February 10, 2017, followed by “Ninjago” on September 22, 2017, and then “The LEGO Movie Sequel” on May 18, 2018, before the “Billion Brick Race” wraps it up on May 24, 2019, details Screen Rant.
Warner Bros announced late in February last year that “The LEGO Movie Sequel” will be in the works soon and it will be helmed by acclaimed comedy Director Rob Schrab.
The movie shall also be the first full feature directorial debut of Rob Schrab, who has helmed episodes of such hit TV series as “Community,” “The Mindy Project,” and “Parks and Recreation.”
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who wrote and directed “The LEGO Movie” have been tapped to write the screenplay of the sequel based on a story by Lord, Miller, Jared Stem, and Michelle Morgan.
Perfect man for the job
Both Lord and Miller also came out with a joint statement where they expressed their excitement of collaborating and working together with Rob Schrab, describing the director as a comedy genius and a visual savant.
The two said that they have been stalking Rob for years just to entice him to work with them because aside from being a hard worker, the Director has the superb aesthetic values and unique sense of humor that they consider as a passionately nerdy voice to “The LEGO Movie Sequel.”
Lord and Miller added that people who know Rob would surely be slapping their foreheads upon learning that he was chosen to direct “The LEGO Movie Sequel” because he is perfect for the job.
Schrab has already earned a WGA Award nomination for writing, directing, and acting as executive producer of “The Sarah Silverman Program.”
He once earned an Annie Award nomination in 2007 for Best Writing in an Animated Feature Production, for the Oscar-nominated comedy “Monster House.” He has also been nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special for his work during the 81st Academy Awards.
It was not just mere nominations for Schrab as he already won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
Shaking things up
Reports have it that “The LEGO Movie Sequel” is going to shake things up for the franchise as it will be introducing new characters to the fold, in addition to having more fun cameos.
There are reports that there shall be an appearance by The Doctor from the popular time travel TV series “Doctor Who” if Director Schrab can get the nod of the BBC, who is producing and airing the show.
Lord and Miller likewise made it clear that they intend to broaden the types of characters that they would incorporate into the sequel including more female characters in order to have a more balanced representation of gender.
In an interview last year, Chris Miller was quoted as saying that they can feel the whole movie culture starting to wake up to the fact that half the audience are women. He cited in particular “Frozen,” which is why he expects that there will be a great flourishing of women filmmakers and subject matter in the future.
According to Cinema Blend, “The LEGO Movie Sequel” has taken over the playdate of “Madagascar 4” which was pulled out because of the reshuffle in DreamWorks Animation.
