Apparently, when Pistol and Boo arrived in the US, they were also subjected by US Customs and Border Protection to investigation considering that the US does not consider Australia as a country free of rabies.
The department said that the process on the two dogs that just came from another country, is meant to ensure that proper safeguarding procedures are followed to stop rabies from reaching or spreading in the US.
A department spokesman said that all dogs must have proof of rabies vaccination unless they came from a country which is considered by the US as rabies-free. They are also being subjected to temporary confinement until after they have met and complied with the requirements.
The spokesman added that Australia is not considered as a rabies-free country because lyssaviruses in bats have been previously reported in the country as well as fatal human rabies cases too.
