‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’ Heads Back to the Root of the Franchise; Henry and Carina to be the Next Will and Elizabeth? Let’s See

Six years after the last film, “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” is ready to give the franchise another run. The fifth installment officially titled “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is bound to hit theaters on July 7, 2017, and franchise staples Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom will be back as Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, respectively.

According to Movie Pilot, the latest addition to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise will work on going back to the elements of the first movie. The film reportedly also aims to repeat the success of the “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” shown way back in 2003.

With “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth movie of the franchise released in 2011, becoming a financial success but a critical miss, Disney opted to go back to the franchise’s roots without forgetting to add new elements to the upcoming film’s plot.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is written by Jeff Nathanson, who has been involved with films like “Indiana Jones,” “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” and “Catch Me If You Can” among others. The movie is being helmed by Espen Samberg and Joachim Ronning who first worked together on the film “Kon-Tiki.” Jerry Bruckheimer is credited as producer.

Recently, as part of the ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ celebration, Bruckheimer released a production still of the movie showing the whole cast and crew of the upcoming adventure film on set.

Reports say that the latest film will serve as a soft reboot to the franchise that has spanned more than a decade. In an interview, Bloom was the first one to drop the term reboot with regards to the upcoming film.

Details about the upcoming film are slowly surfacing. According to reports, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” will see the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow meeting his former foe in the form of Captain Salazer.

Academy Award winner Javier Bardem is set to portray the ghost pirate. His character plans to exact revenge on Sparrow for his brother’s death.

Salazer is determined to put an end to Sparrow’s life and he’s bringing his hoard of ghost pirates from the Devil’s Triangle to carry out his mission. It is unknown though if Sparrow was responsible for Salazer’s brother’s demise.

As for the beloved Captain Jack, in order to combat his old enemy’s return, he will be in search of the Trident of Poseidon which will give him the power over the seas. This is where Bloom’s Will Turner comes into the picture. Turner, who’s doubling a Davy Jones, and Sparrow will once again team up for another adventure.

Other cast members like Academy Award-winning actor Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R. McNally, and Stephen Graham are set to reprise their roles to play Barbossa, Gibbs, and Scrum, respectively.

It won’t be an easy task getting hold of the Trident, though, especially when someone else wants her hand on it. Kaya Scodelario of “The Maze Runner” is one of the film’s newcomers. The 23-year-old actress will be portraying Carina Smyth, an astronomer who’s on a mission to find the Trident for her own battle.

In an interview, Scodelario admitted that the latest film does take a lot of inspiration from the first film. She adds that the producers really wanted to head back to the beginning. They wanted to go back where it started so it could all make sense, make it easier for them to tie things up and eventually lead to new storylines.

In spite of criticisms saying that her character is the replacement for Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann, Kaya says that her character indeed has a lot of similar traits with Swann but Carina is on a journey of her own, she’s very distinct in a way.
