‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 3 to See the Return of the Cut-Wife, But Already as an American Psychiatrist to Treat Vanessa Ives!

Patti LuPone was featured in episode 3 of Season 2 of the British-American horror TV series “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime as the cut-wife Joan Clayton.

Cut-wife is a term used during the Victorian era to describe a hedge witch who severed her ties to her coven because she does not want to be married to the devil. But when she appeared in that episode of Season 2 of “Penny Dreadful,” Patti was more than just a cut-wife. She and her remote house in the glades became the refuge of Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, when the latter was out trying to find herself. She was also the one who taught Vanessa the Verbis Diablo, the knowledge of the devil’s tongue.

It was also in the same remote house that Vanessa and Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Harnett, decided to escape later in Season 2 to protect Sir Malcolm Murray, played by Timothy Dalton, whose house was being penetrated by dark forces at play.

It was through the cut-wife that Vanessa rediscovered her faith in God. The cut-wife also told her that her faith was to be her greatest weapon in defending herself against the attempts of the fallen angel Lucifer, and his coven of witches, to get her soul.

But the cut-wife was regarded by the townfolks as someone who was practicing witchcraft and a lynch mob came to her house one day and she was burned at the stake, thus ending the guesting stint of Patti LuPone. But flashbacks of Vanessa Ives often feature her in some of the latter episodes of Season 2.

Deserves to return

Apparently, Patti LuPone has done remarkably well as the cut-wife that the producers and showrunner have given her a chance to return on Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful.”

Naturally, she can no longer return to the TV series as the cut-wife as her character has already been burned at the stake after being accused of practicing witchcraft.

Filming for Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful” has already began and based on the first official image that made the rounds on the internet, Patti will return as American psychiatrist Dr. Seward who shall be treating Vannesa Ives for her alter ego’s battle with evil forces that she can’t seem to escape, notes Variety.

The image shows Dr. Seward comforting Vanessa in what looks like a padded cell, leaving fans and critics to assume that the female lead star of “Penny Dreadful” will be committed in an asylum.

The good news for the fans of the show is that Patti LuPone will not just be returning as a guest star but as a regular cast member of the popular TV series.

More characters on the way

After the sleeper success of its first two seasons and Showtime renewing it for a third season, the producers and showrunner decided to literally put on a show for the upcoming season with more new characters, and thus guest stars.

In addition to Patti, also expected to be introduced in Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful” are Dr. Henry Jekyll, to be played by Shazad Latif; zoologist Dr. Alexander Sweet, to be played by Christian Camargo; Dr. Seward’s young secretary, to be played by Sam Barnett; the enigmatic native American Kaetenay, to be played by Wes Studi; and Lily’s and Dorian’s young acolyte Justine, to be played by Jessica Barden, details TV Line.

Showtime also confirmed that “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 shall have nine episodes, one short of its 10-episode run during the last season but one episode more during its premiere season.

During the Season 2 finale, it was shown that the five main characters of the show – Vanessa Ives, Ethan Chandler, Sir Malcolm Murray, Victor Frankenstein, played by Harry Treadaway, and John Clare, played by Rory Kinnear – decided to part ways to once again find themselves.

Vanessa was left alone in the house of Sir Malcolm in London though it appears that she intends on leaving it too.

Ethan Chandler admitted to Scotland Yard authorities that he was responsible for all the grisly murders in London as a werewolf and was being expatriated back to America.
