The “Fast & Furious” franchise has always been about fast cars, plenty of muscles, and a lot of slam-bang action. It is officially the most successful film franchise of Universal Pictures considering that “Fast & Furious 7” is the sixth all-time highest-grossing movie in the box-office worldwide.
The film series has never pretended nor attempted to do an Oscars-worthy film over the course of seven movies.
But things would change come the eighth installment of the franchise, whose working title is “Fast & Furious 8” and will be hitting theaters on April 14, 2017.
In a recent pronouncement actor and producer Vin Diesel said that the entry of F Gary Gray as director of “Fast & Furious 8” has immediately turned the next installment of the franchise as a possible contender for the Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, reports the Indian Express.
Diesel said that F. Gary Gray agreed to direct the latest installment of the commercially-successful action ensemble franchise with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder.
Accordingly, Gray told them that he is going to take the biggest saga in the world and throw Oscars in the process too.
A conflicted Dominic Toretto
Apart from a great storyline, “Fast & Furious 8” shall also see an intense drama involving Vin Diesel’s character, Dominic ‘Dom’ Toretto.
The actor recently teased that Dominic Toretto will be carrying some hefty baggage after the last movie of the film series and shall turn him into a dark and tormented individual, details Cinema Blend.
Diesel explained that his character is conflicted, in a way, and that would really shock the fans. The actor explained that Dom is coming off a lot of emotions from “Fast & Furious 7” and the loss that the seventh movie represents, alluding to the real-life passing away of his good friend Paul Walker.
He added that Toretto’s storyline in “Fast & Furious 8” is kind of cold-blooded and he promised fans that it will hit them like a ton of bricks.
While it was unlikely that “Fast & Furious 8” would not unfold without Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Connor being referenced, Vin Diesel’s comments suggest that it’s going to be playing on Dom’s mind throughout the film and that it would lead to him making some pretty questionable decisions.
The most dangerous and sexiest villain of the franchise
When it was confirmed early this year that the big bad for “Fast & Furious 8” was going to be Charlize Theron, fans had no idea how her character Cipher is going to be one. After all, aside from being pretty, Theron is also very sexy for her age.
Now, it seems that Theron’s big bad character in the upcoming eighth installment of the movie franchise is going to be the most dangerous and sexiest villain that the franchise has ever had in the span of eight movies.
The confirmation came no less from actress Michelle Rodriguez, who is a franchise regular and plays Letty Ortiz, the romantic partner of Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto.
The 38-year-old Latina actress also revealed that Charlize Theron is one of the best villains in the franchise.
In an interview, Rodriguez said that “Fast & Furious 8” is another slam-bang hardcore action movie and Charlize Theron is one of the most powerful villains she has ever seen in the franchise.
She added that she only got to work with the Academy Award-winning actress but the experience only backed up her call to add for more women in the franchise.
The actress has previously said that “Fast & Furious” franchise should have more female characters in its future films. And it seems that the producers are heading towards that direction especially with the casting of Theron and British veteran actress Helen Mirren.
