When mobile gaming was gaining ground, strategy games in particular weren’t seen as a very attractive potential option for this style of playing, at least not real-time strategies like “StarCraft” and “WarCraft”. And now, we’ve got not one but several mobile titles in the strategy genre that have proven to be highly successful, and have been competing hard for the top spot in every app store that they’re available in.
“Clash of Clans” is probably the best-known among these, but its popularity has been jeopardized recently by titles like “DomiNations” and “Boom Beach”. The three games make up pretty much the whole market for this type of strategy games right now, and they’re all different in their own unique ways, despite sharing some common basic ideas.
“Dominations” starts out in a solo style, with the player building up a base and gathering resources, while also setting up buildings that produce units. After that, the multiplayer component actually begins and the player competes against others. Some have compared the base building style to “Civilization”, in the sense that the game progresses through different ages, giving players access to new and better technology.
A player can actually reach a state where their army consists of robots and advanced futuristic units, and this sets the game apart from its competitors quite a bit. In the end though, it all comes down to leveling up in order to defeat the other players.
“Boom Beach” is liked by players who prefer a simpler, more straightforward gameplay style, as the game focuses on shorter build times and is more tactically oriented, relying on strategic decisions from the player for success. There are different ways to approach the game, depending on one’s play style, and its diversity has made it very popular among fans of deep strategy games. It’s the kind of game that’s easy to learn but hard to master, according to most accounts.
It’ll be interesting to see if another game manages to gain ground in this genre, as there are already lots of people enjoying all three main games, and there doesn’t seem to be much room for any extra titles right now. Of course, there are also numerous players on Android, and this huge market definitely has some potential that can be utilized by crafty developers. There are most likely other gameplay features that can be explored in order to diversify the experience, and with enough time, someone else might discover something new as well. Until then, players definitely have a lot available to have fun with, and all three main games on the market offer the same basic gameplay in a different, unique way.
