American electric carmaker Tesla will start building its Model X SUV in the third quarter of this year but the company has already created quite a stir in the international motoring industry when a prototype of its Model X was seen undergoing test runs in the streets of California in recent days.
The stir and the excitement it caused only validated the expected strong demand for the upcoming electric vehicle (EV) SUV.
It also caught the attention of Audi, one of several German carmakers who are looking to join Tesla in the EV market sooner than later.
Because of the projected strong demand for the Tesla Model X, Audi is reportedly looking at rolling out its own EV SUV to the road by 2018, report Learn Bonds.
Meeting the demand for EV SUVs
Audi thinks that Tesla would not be able to meet the demand for EV SUVs in the market that is why it is planning to launch an all-electric SUV, which is reportedly the Audi A6, already built by 2018.
In terms of cost, Tesla will surely have the upper hand since Audi as a brand is known for producing luxury and quite naturally expensive cars. So if it forays into the production of electric vehicles, it is expected to be quite costly compared to Tesla’s.
The American electric vehicle maker will also be ahead of Audi by a good two years in the EV SUV market so that is plenty of headstart.
The Tesla Model S has been lording it over the luxury sedan electric vehicle market since 2012 and there is not even one EV that is comparable to it now plying the US roads.
Telsa will be mass producing the Model X in the third quarter of this year for likely release late this year or early next year. The company will then focus on the production of its Model 3, which is its mid-range electric vehicle, for possible release in 2017.
No more delays
After being delayed by a year, the Tesla Model X will finally be hitting the retail markets either late this year or early next year, unless the company comes up again with another aberration or excuse to push back the long-awaited market debut of its sport utility crossover electric vehicle.
Tesla Model X is a full-size crossover utility vehicle which was unveiled by Tesla Motors in Los Angeles, California as early as February 2012.
It is currently being developed from the full-size sedan platform of the Tesla Model S and is being mass produced at the company’s factory in Fremont, California.
