‘Iron Man 3’ Director and Writer Says Robert Downey Jr. will be Back for ‘Iron Man 4’

Despite rumors to the contrary, “Iron Man 3” director and writer Shane Black believes that Robert Downey Jr. will be back to reprise his role as Tony Stark and Iron Man in “Iron Man 4,” which he believes will hit theaters in 2018.

There have been reports that Robert Downey Jr. shall no longer be back for “Iron Man 4” as the young Harley Skeener would take over the spot of Tony Stark in the iron suit. It has been reported as early as late last year that 13-year-old actor Ty Simpkins would take the spot and shall become the lead actor for “Iron Man 4.”

Marvel Studios has been very quiet about “Iron Man 4,” not bothering to issue any statement to confirm or deny those reports or rumors and clarifying whether fans have seen the last of the outspoken Robert Downey Jr. in the iron suit.

Based on good grounds

Director Shane Black has all the right reasons to say that RDJ will be back to reprise his Tony Stark role since “Iron Man 3” is currently the 7th all-time top grossing film in history with its worldwide box office take of $1.22 Billion. Any logical man in Marvel would not just throw away that success and gamble on a new formula.

That’s in addition to the fact that Robert Downey Jr. will be donning his Tony Stark role and Iron Man suit once again in at least three more Marvel movies in the future from next year beginning with “Captain America: Civil War” due in 2016, “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” to be released in 2018, and “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” to be released in 2019.

Marvel would really come out ridiculous from the perspective of the fans if there will be a different actor taking on the iron suit in “Iron Man 4” while Robert Downey Jr. still plays the role in the last two Avengers films. That would really be awkward, if not absurd.

All these speculations however would start clearing up once Marvel Studios makes an announcement sometime in the future on how it wants the franchise to move from “Iron Man 3.”

As far as Robert Downey Jr. is concerned, he was talking a lot about “Iron Man 4” last year but somehow started keeping mum about it this year. It is likely that negotiations are now in the works between him and Marvel Studios.

There was even a report that came out in November last year that Robert is convincing actor-friend Mel Gibson to take the directorial job for “Iron Man 4.”

Last stab at the role

Initial speculations have been going around that Ty Simpkins will be the next cast member who shall don the “Iron Man” suit. The reports cited that the young actor shall take the place of Tony Stark in “Iron Man 4” which many find absurd as it will disturb the plotline. The time element of the movie would simply not make sense at all.

Iron Man 4

A recent report from the Christian Post said that Gwyneth Paltrow’s character from the ‘Iron Man” franchise, Ms. Pepper Potts, would have her last appearance on “Iron Man 4.”

  1. If iron man 4 does happen (hoping it does) or should be based on the “Superior Iron Man” storyline! Also, giving the mantle of iron man to Harley is a bad idea!

  2. Robert should be in the movie if there is an iron man 4. As he created the character from 1-3 he shouldn’t have his spot taken. Iron man is his role and it ended in iron man 3 if there’s a four it’s a comeback for him.
