Currently, the situation is a bit strange – while the deaths definitely continue and we’ve been getting them in good quantities over and over again, they are at least more “sensible” and they mean more for what’s happening between the various characters.
This has also allowed some fans to occasionally predict when a new character is about to be killed. When the plot is moving in a way that the death of someone specific could particularly help tell the story and push everything forward, fans usually start expecting that person to end up getting killed.
And that sometimes does happen, although Martin certainly still knows how to surprise his fans and distract them while he’s preparing something that will truly shock everyone.
Some have been suspecting that the situation with Jon Snow is exactly something like that, a big ruse to draw attention away from something else that’s much more important. However, we have no idea what that might be or when that revelation might be made. It will probably happen at some point early on in the next book in the series, judging by the overall familiar style of the author, and knowing how far Martin is willing to go with his plots sometimes, it might be something truly shocking that makes fans even more upset than the scene with Jon Snow.
