The fad nowadays is being fit and healthy. That mostly includes regular exercise and healthy eating. Most health-conscious people now substitute junk foods to healthy treats such as fruit smoothies, mixed dried nuts and fruits. What if I tell you that ice cream can now be considered healthy and vegan?
Ice cream has long been considered as a guilty pleasure. Now, a “healthier” than regular ice cream had been introduced in the market.
Wait, if it’s considered healthy, then it negates being a guilty pleasure as it is, don’t you think? Even so, eating ice cream is one of the happiest feelings a person could feel. It makes you feel like a kid again ready for any adventure. I believe some even feels it’s heaven on earth for a short while until that last bite.
A new ice cream parlour, Mylk Bar from a creative vegetarian and vegan cafe The Cardamom Pod offers guilt-free ice cream. It is located in Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach in Queensland, Australia.
The owner, Sean Pinnell, claims it’s definitely healthier than regular ice cream. It is considered a vegan because it contains no gelatin, eggs, milk products, sugar, preservatives – nothing artificial. Pinnell also says it makes people feel a bit more confident to get stuck into an ice cream.
If that’s what an ice cream is, then there would probably be a lot of “Millenials” and fit-conscious people who would dive into that. However, Pinnell added that it is still “sweet” so he cannot implicitly justify that it is “healthy” but claims it’s still the better option than the regular ice cream. What is ice cream if it’s not sweet, right?
Everything was made in the house, from using real vanilla to making cookies. At the moment, they are starting with classic flavors, peanut butter fudge, salted caramel, vanilla and chocolate cookie crunch. Their focus is perfecting the taste and process and gathering feedback.
Their taste-testing, which is of course always an enjoyable process, includes substituting milk with almond milk instead of soy. They said that almond milk is a little richer and the richness of the nut makes it much creamier.
Popular ice cream brand Häagen Dazs is also following with the trend since it’s also releasing a dairy-free ice cream. They are going vegan using vegan ingredients such as coconut cream, sugar, and soy.
It was recently released in the US exclusive in the Target stores with four flavors, Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Salted Fudge Truffle, Mocha Chocolate Cookie, and Coconut Caramel.
Another popular ice cream brand, Ben and Jerry’s have already released non-dairy ice cream earlier with flavors like Chunky Monkey, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, P.B. and Cookies, Coffee Caramel Fudge, Coconut Seven Layer Bar, Caramel Almond Brittle and Cherry Garcia.
Well, it seems like vegan ice cream is making its way to the top of “healthy” guilty-pleasure food for some. However, some traditionalists would probably still choose the regular guilty-feeling ice cream.
Nevertheless, whatever our choices and reasons in eating ice cream, I think that feeling of euphoria with every bite is what we always crave for.
