The release date of the sixth book of critically-acclaimed author George R.R. Martin from his fantasy novel “A Song of Ice and Fire” has been shortened from January to March next year when HBO confirmed a few days ago that Season 6 of “Game of Thrones” will premiere in April 2016.
It has been reported a few months ago that the release date window for “The Winds of Winter” will be any time from October 2015 to March 2016 or just before the air date of Season 6 of “Game of Thrones” on HBO.
When rumors started coming out last month that “Game of Thrones” Season 6 would premiere in May 2016 as a result of Sunday night programming changes on HBO, the release date window for the book has been extended by a month or until the end of April.
However, when HBO confirmed a few days ago that the popular TV series will debut as usual in April, that actually leaves Martin all of the first three months of next year for the release of “The Winds of Winter.” As it is, it is very unlikely that the sixth book would come out this year.
No seventh book in 2017
It is already certain that “The Winds of Winter” will come out in 2016. Speculations have it that the reason why it is being withheld by Martin is that he does not want to make it the ultimate source of spoilers for Season 6 of “Game of Thrones.”
However, what seems clear at this point is that the seventh and final book of the fantasy novel series, titled “A Dream of Spring” will not come out next year before Season 7 of “Game of Thrones” premieres on HBO.
Based on Martin’s writing timeline, it took him five years from releasing the third book of the series titled “A Storm of Swords” to the unveiling of the fourth book titled “A Feast for Crows.” Then from the fourth book to the fifth book titled “A Dance of Dragons,” Martin took all of six years to complete. From the fifth book to “The Winds of Winter,” the author spent another five years so it is very unlikely that he would be able to complete the seventh book in just one year, details the Winter is Coming.
In a recent interview, actress Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in “Game of Thrones” said that the TV series could only go as far as Season 8 although if viewers would be asked, they would certainly want the show to extend well beyond Season 10.
Season 8 of “Game of Thrones” would premiere in the spring of 2018, which is just two years from the release of “The Winds of Winter.” Given the writing pace of George R.R. Martin, it is almost impossible and so not like him if he releases “A Dream of Spring before Season 8.
Spring of 2016
It seems that Martin himself hinted of the spring 2016 release of “The Winds of Winter” when he recently made a cameo appearance on the Halloween episode of the Syfy TV series “Z Nation,” according to Australia Network News.
The author appeared in the show as a zombified version of himself on the episode titled “The Collector.” He was seen inside a celebrity zombie room being presented to a collector, who seemed to be unfamiliar with Martin.
The collector was told that Martin was the author of “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which many fans believe was a hint that Martin will be releasing “The Winds of Winter” in the spring of 2016.
Spring begins late February to May so the timing is consistent if the book gets released anytime from February to March or even early April next year.
