Last season, fans of The CW hit show “The Vampire Diaries” had a painful time dealing with Elena Gilbert’s situation. To compensate Nina Dobrev exiting the series after its sixth season, her character has entered the state of being comatose for the entire span of Bonnie Bennett’s lifetime — all thanks to the evil Kai.
This colossal change led the show to make a lot of adjustments. Christian Post notes that with Dobrev now out of the picture, the dynamics between the characters this season will have a sense of change of air. But given Nina’s sudden exit, “The Vampire Diaries” refuses to be shaken as it now shifts back to the ultimate core of the story – the Salvatore brothers.
Recently, The CW released the first official poster for the seventh season of “The Vampire Diaries” featuring the Salvatore brothers and it spells heartbreak all over. The latest key art promo finds Damon and Stefan staring off into a dark and stormy night sky and the words ‘heartbreak is eternal’ is scribbled.
As per MTV, it is important to note that the brothers are outside the entrance to Mystic Falls which might imply that they’ll be driven out of their hometown by the season’s villain — their own mother.
As seen on the season’s trailer released a few weeks ago, the show completely brings in a whole new level of drama and conflict courtesy of Lily. It’s also worth noting that the final events of Season 6 clued viewers on what is bound to happen when the show returns in less than a week.
During the Season 6 finale, the Salvatore matriarch, played by Annie Wersching, was finally reunited with what she considers her real family – the Heretics. She even dragged Michael Malarkey’s Enzo along with her diabolical plan. Also, there has been a quick time jump and Mystic Falls appeared to be essentially abandoned.
Based on the official synopsis of the season premiere, Lily, and the Heretics are bound to take over the town to wreak havoc which in turn may bring in a lot of family drama.
Stefan takes on the role of protecting Mystic Falls from her mother and her army of the undead. Enzo meanwhile will struggle to find a place in Lily’s new life which will allow him to assess where his true loyalties in life really lie.
Bonnie, played by Kat Graham, will spent most of her time keeping tabs on Damon as he faces life without Elena and a newly minted deputy Matt, played by Zach Roerig, teams up with Stefan and Caroline to put a stop to the Heretics.
Meanwhile, according to TV Line, the season premiere will have a heart-wrenching storyline for Ian Somerhalder’s Damon. With the love of his life now in a long and deep slumber, the older Salvatore brother clearly is the most affected and this is what viewers are going to see this season — how Damon will suffer and endure the loss.
Speaking to TV Guide, showrunner Caroline Dries confirmed that Damon will resort to excessive drinking just to get over Elena. Dries also made it clear that Damon is not ready to find a new love again let alone hook up with other women so fans can’t expect the old playboy Salvatore back just yet.
Probably one of the most interesting to watch out for this season is how Damon and Bonnie will interact. According to Just Jared, Damon will have a hard time looking at Bonnie without thinking that ending her life will mean having Elena back, but over the course of Season 6, he and Bonnie have developed a strong friendship when they were both trapped in Kai’s prison world.
As for the other brother, Paul Wesley’s Stefan will finally have the guts to pursue a relationship with Candice Accola’s Caroline. Cartermatt reports that Season 7 will focus on Steroline’s blooming romance and the pair just might actually hit it off after a few episodes.
