Ever since certain files popped up in the game data of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered”, gamers have been speculating about the addition of new weapons to the game. And while some dismissed the assets as old unused content that was never meant to make it to the public in the first place, others were not so convinced.
And now, thanks to an official announcement, we finally know the truth – the game is indeed getting several new weapons in a few days. The three guns include a new shotgun, an assault rifle and a six-round revolver, throwing a good deal of variety into the mix.
This has been a controversial move among some fans of the original game, who claim that Activision shouldn’t touch the balance of “Call of Duty 4” and leave the remaster as it is. However, that doesn’t seem to be in the studio’s plans, and they are apparently going to try squeezing as much as they can out of this release.
It’s interesting to note that the remaster of “Call of Duty 4” seems to be enjoying more attention than the most recent main release in the franchise. Indeed, the popularity of “Call of Duty” as a whole has been on a decline lately, and it’s not clear how much longer the games can go on for before they before unprofitable to make.
There has been some speculation that Activision might move away from the current annual release model and make the launches more spread out. However, even though this is exactly what many fans have been calling for, it could actually have a negative impact on the franchise as a whole.
“Call of Duty” relies on a certain degree of momentum to keep going forward, and if Activision stopped releasing it annually, they could lose that. On the other hand, this hasn’t stopped franchises like “Battlefield” from retaining their popularity and even increasing it, so it’s hard to tell exactly how this could affect “Call of Duty”.
Let’s also not forget that Activision are masters of marketing and they could easily spin this into their favor if they wanted to, which makes it even harder to predict how such a move would affect the series as a whole.
For now though, most players are focusing their attention on the current developments around the remaster of “Modern Warfare”. The game ended up disappointing some players with the execution of its idea, and even though it was a mostly faithful remaster, it still suffered in some areas such as performance and connectivity, leading players to have an overall negative opinion of it.
The DLC update should breathe some fresh new life into the game, but at this point Activision may as well just move on and forget about this experiment. It’s hard to tell if it’s the execution or if the basic idea was flawed, but one thing is clear right now – not many people are fond of what the studio did to their memories of the original “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”.
There were some talks about a possible remaster of the sequel to that game as well, but it looks like Activision might want to put that idea on hold if it really was on the table. At least if they’re going to execute it the same way as this remaster – but they may also have some ideas which could improve reception of the game.
