Director Brad Bird has recently confirmed that the storyline of the sequel to the 2004 animated family superhero movie “The Incredibles,” will focus again on the characters, who are basically the Parr family.
Bird explained that although “The Incredibles 2” is a superhero movie, it would not be like most superhero films these days where the focus is on the powers of the character or characters.
He said that the power themselves are not interesting because it is the characters who are interesting and how they react to having those powers is where the storyline of “The Incredibles 2” will be revolving around, notes the iTech Post.
When “The Incredibles” was released in 2004, it went on to rake in $633 million in the box office, which brings to question why Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios have decided to make a sequel more than 12 years later.
Initially, “The Incredibles 2” was already set for a June 21, 2019 playdate but last month, Disney Pictures decided to switch it with “Toy Story 4” and the former’s release date is now set on June 15, 2018, a push-up of one year and six days. The official announcement was made by Pixar Animation Studios, though.
Accelerated production schedule
More than anything else, the reason apparently for the switch in the scheduled playdates of the two animated movies was because of the accelerated production schedule for “The Incredibles 2,” reports Variety.
It seems that Oscars-winning director Brad Bird, who helmed “The Incredibles” when it was released to theaters in 2014 and who shall also be helming the sequel, got to a rather good head start in both the pre-production and production works for “The Incredibles 2” that a release date that is one year earlier has become possible.
Disney and Pixar are hoping that “The Incredibles 2” shall go on to join the prestigious billion dollar club which several of its animated movies got into including “Frozen,” “Zootopia,” and just recently “Finding Dory.”
Also in the list of the animated billion-dollar club films is the “Minions” by Universal and Illumination Entertainment.
Got more fans excited for the sequel
The pushed up release date of “The Incredibles 2” has certainly excited its enthusiastic and anxiously awaiting fans as the sequel to the 2004 hit movie shall come out 14 years later and no longer 15 years.
While the switch in the release dates would not affect the plotlines of both films, what seems clear is that an earlier date on the theaters for a long-awaited sequel usually brings positive results as seen in the case of “Finding Dory” which came out in June this year, 13 years after its predecessor movie “Finding Nemo” hit the cinemas.
As for “Toy Story 4,” being pushed back by one year would hardly be felt considering that “Toy Story 3” came out in theaters only in 2010 so nine years of wait would hardly matter to its fans.
That’s in addition to the fact that Disney already has an army of Marvel, and “Star Wars” movies on the horizon, which would give fans plenty to keep themselves occupied for the foreseeable future.
Disney Pictures has confirmed as early as last year that there will be a “The Incredibles 2” movie that would come out in theaters on June 15, 2018, which is less down three years from today.
Before Disney made the official announcement that Brad Bird will be directing “The Incredibles 2,” the director said that he will only be joining the animated film if it would have a good story to tell. The fact that Bird is now onboard meant that “The Incredibles 2” has found a perfect story already.
When he was asked recently for possible hints about the movie, Bird said that he is a type of person who does not like to give out spoilers because he also does not like unwrapping presents before Christmas.
