While the fifth and final season of “Switched at Birth” won’t be premiering until early next year, executive producer Lizzy Weiss has recently spilled how the cast filmed the final scene of the series.
On Twitter, the showrunner revealed that the last scene of the TV series is reminiscent of the first scene of the pilot episode since it was filmed in the same Kennish house.
Lizzy says that the day they shot the final scene was perfect because the weather cooperated, the cast were all in high spirits, and it was all in all a good day for everyone.
Weiss adds that the final season, just like previous seasons, will tackle important issues with one episode focusing on racism.
Movie News Guide reports that an upcoming episode, entitled “Occupy Truth,” will tackle the racism African-American students face in college.
The website reveals that the plot of the episode deals with a white student dressing up as his favorite rapper Lil Wayne at a costume party which sparks outrage among the black students.
The episode aims to address the subtle and aggressive racial treatment that non-Caucasian youth get in this day and age.
Meanwhile, the showrunner related that shooting the scene was a momentous one for all the cast and crew. She went on saying several members of the team went out of their way to visit the set even though they weren’t required.
They visited simply because they wanted to be present and witness the nostalgic moment unfold. Other cast brought wine and food to celebrate this joyous moment for the show.
Weiss further revealed that after filming the final scene, almost everyone started crying and hugging one another. Ending her lengthy post, Weiss thanked all the cast and crew for their hard work and thanked the fans for allowing the show to stay on the air for five seasons.
Christian Today reports that the final episode was filmed back in April. Lizzy also took to Twitter to give a preview of something in a future episode.
The executive producer says that Natalie Taylor’s song “Fight On” will play in a big moment in Season 5. While she did not elaborate what the big moment was, fans can expect that it will be another milestone in the upcoming season.
The drama series was renewed for a fifth and shortened final season last October. The upcoming season will consist of 10 episodes designed to tie up all loose ends.
Freeform has already released all the episode titles for the upcoming season. However, no exact date has been given yet. What’s certain is that the final season of the show will air sometime in January 2017.
Vannessa Marano, who portrays Bay Kennish, admitted in a recent interview that revisiting some of the storylines shows how much time has passed and emphasizes what the characters have been through.
The drama centers on Bay Kennish who discovers through a lab assignment her blood type is not compatible with her parents John and Kathryn.
Genetic testing then confirms that Bay is not the biological daughter of the Kennishes. It was then revealed that the hospital mistakenly switched Bay with another newborn, Daphne Vasquez, played by Katie Leclerc.
Daphne is deaf and lost her hearing ability due to meningitis at the age three. The Kennishes then invite Daphne and her mother Regina to their home. This forces the girls, along with both families to understand their differences and embrace their similarities.
While the shoe mostly focuses on Bay and Daphne’s lives, discovering who they are while balancing school, jobs, and their unconventional family, it also tackles social issues such as the deaf culture, class differences, racism, audism, and much more.
