Apart from tying all loose ends, the fifth and final season of the American teen drama series “Switched at Birth” on Freeform shall feature several returning stories from the previous seasons, reveals actress Vanessa Marano.
Marano plays the lead character Bay Madeline Kennish in “Switched at Birth” along with Katie Leclerc, who plays Daphne Vasquez.
It could be recalled that during the Season 4 finale, Bay and Daphne started living independently in China as they take on new jobs. However, the cliffhanger showed that they got an emergency call at home asking them to return to Kansas in the US.
This means that the Season 5 premiere in January 2017 will see both Bay and Daphne back in the US answering to “The Call,” which happens to be the title of the first episode of “Switched at Birth” fifth season, reports Movie News Guide.
A few weeks ago, Vanessa Marano also said in an interview that the Season 5 of “Switched at Birth” will see Bay and Daphne evolving further as individuals since they already explored the possibility of living independently in new places.
A nostalgic setting
Showrunner Lizzy Weiss revealed in a recent interview that the finale episode of Season 5 of “Switched at Birth” shall take place at the Kennish home.
She says that the setting is nostalgic for the viewers who have been following the TV series since its first season.
Weiss also revealed that the next season shall feature the sensitive subject of racial discrimination, particularly in the campus. Apparently, the show will feature a white college student partying while wearing a Lil Wayne costume, which the colored people would really find offensive.
She said that “Switched at Birth” has done its best to be honest and accurate on both sides of the issue Weiss explained that in the white student’s defense, he was just celebrating by dressing up as his favorite artist and he had no intentions of mocking the black race with it, details the Hall of Fame Magazine.
The series creator also pointed out that the series aims to give a different perspective to the viewers and they will present the episodes from the point of view of their black characters.
A 10-month time jump
There was a 10-month time jump during the finale episode of Season 4 of “Switched at Birth.” From their home in Kansas, Bay Kennish and Daphne Vasquez traveled to China to put their lives together again despite leaving so much back home.
The cliffhanger during Season 4 was the call that they just received from their home that shall force them to go back to Kansas.
It can also be recalled during the same episode, Bay and Travis, played by Ryan Lane, had a big moment after he organized a whole exhibit for her. Daphne, on the other hand, was still struggling with her decision to study medicine.
Marano said that the upcoming Season 5 would be very much like a New Year because so much time has passed and the girls are at the new places in their lives.
The young actress said that fans should revisit stuff just to show how much time has actually passed.
There are reports saying that Vanessa’s character would finally get a new boyfriend in Season 5 of “Switched at Birth” and fans are hoping that she would finally take Travis seriously.
In the same interview, Vanessa said that she likes the idea of Bay and Travis being a couple in “Switched at Birth.”
She said that she loves the idea of Bay and Travis together because the relationship came out of nowhere. It would be a complete departure from Bay’s relationship with Emmet, who cheated on her.
