Marvel and Sony have forged a historic collaboration in February 2015 where the latter has agreed to cede the rights of Spider-Man and paved the way for his official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Spider-Man as a Marvel superhero already made his debut in the MCU during the showing of “Captain America: Civil War” released in May last year but it will be on July 7 this year where he would have a stand-alone movie entitled “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
It will be the third reboot of the franchise but it should be noted that the first were both under Sony Pictures and it starred Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, the alter-ego of Spider-Man.
When Marvel was casting the role of Spider-Man on the third film reboot, there were rumors that instead of Peter Parker, the producers could decide to use Miles Morales instead. In Marvel comics, the Spider-Man suit is no longer worn by Peter Parker but Miles Morales, who bi-racial.
So when it was confirmed that Tom Holland shall take on the role of Spider-Man, it was clear that Marvel went with the basic story of Peter Parker, though in a much younger setting as they are taking the character back to high school.
For a while, the reports of Miles Morales as Spider-Man died down until Sony Pictures confirmed a few days ago that it would be releasing an animated “Spider-Man” movie on December 21, 2018.
In addition to the pronouncement of the producers, another director also confirmed that Miles Morales shall indeed be the alter-ego of the web-slinging superhero in the animated “Spider-Man” movie.
The first disclosure
An animated “Spider-Man” movie was first disclosed during the CinemaCon back in April 2015 with producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller alongside Avi Arad and Amy Pascal.
The movie was originally slated for a release in the summer of 2018 but has since been pushed back to Christmas next year.
However, there was still no official word from the producers back then how the animated “Spider-Man” movie will be different from the new live-action “Spider-Man” franchise, other than breaking new visual ground.
With the confirmation that it is going to be Miles Morales who shall be wearing the Spider-Man suit, the difference has become obvious. The animated movie is to be directed by Persichetti and Peter Ramsey, reports Slash Film.
The film will follow Miles Morales, the popular character originally introduced in the pages of the “Ultimate Spider-Man” comics, rather than Peter Parker.
A bi-racial Spider-Man
Marvel Comics character Miles Morales is a young African-American/Puerto Rican teen from Brooklyn who just so happens to become a new Spider-Man.
Even the vague character details such as pressured with new responsibilities hint at his new super powers.
The part of staying out of trouble and developing his identity is a good indicator too since Morales struggles with whether or not he’s a good person at his core, thanks to the presence of criminal livelihood that runs in his family, thanks to his father and uncle, the former of which has renounced his criminal ways while the latter still commits crimes under the alias of The Prowler.
The official confirmation on Miles Morales as Spider-Man in the upcoming animated film came from Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson,
The animated “Spider-Man” movie was written by Phil Lord, who will also executive produce the film right alongside his “Lego Movie” and “21 Jump Street” partner Chris Miller.
The pair will soon begin production on the “Star Wars” stand-alone Han Solo movie, which they are directing together.
According to critics who were able to attend Sony’s presentation a few days ago, the visual style of the animated “Spider-Man” film is like the already-revealed logo, a combination of cel-shading and graffiti art, with lots of bright colors and dark blacks.
