‘Sleepy Hollow’ Season 4 Likely to be Greenlit by Fox Despite a Frustrating Season 3 Finale!

The 18th and final episode of Season 3 of the American supernatural police drama TV series “Sleepy Hollow” was aired on Fox on April 8 and it left fans flabbergasted.

The series killed off its lead female character Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie, in a shocking twist during the finale episode entitled “Ragnarok.”

Abbie and main protagonist Ichabod Crane, played by Tom Mison, battled against Pandora, played by Shannyn Sossamon, and The Hidden One, played by Peter Mensah, in that episode.

Abbie joined Ichabod and Jenny Mills, played by Lyndie Greenwood, in confronting The Hidden One. Ichabod returns the Pandora’s box to Pandora who uses it to absorb the power of The Hidden One, but it proved unsuccessful as it requires the soul of a Witness.

That’s when Abbie decided to sacrifice herself, leaving Ichabod and Jenny in great despair. But The Hidden One lost his power and Jenny eventually shoots him in the head. Ichabod summons the Headless Horsemen from the box and during the battle with Pandora, he deals a critical injury to Pandora, who died shortly thereafter.

But before Pandora died, she confirmed that there was no way to bring Abbie back to life anymore, reports the MNR Daily.

Likely to be renewed

Amid killing off a fan-favorite character in Abbie Mills, reports have it that “Sleepy Hollow” shall be renewed by Fox for a fourth season

However, up until this time, Fox has yet to make an official statement to confirm that Season 4 of “Sleepy Hollow” shall be greenlit.

Reports have it that despite not-so-good ratings during Season 3, “Sleepy Hollow” has a solid fan base, registered DVR gains, and a famous underlying property which enabled it to make money for the network internationally. These are the main reasons why Fox will renew the show for a fourth season.

The studio is said to be doing contingent staffing moves at the moment in preparation for the renewal of “Sleepy Hollow” for Season 4.

Planning to move forward

It was last March during the WonderCon when “Sleepy Hollow” writer and executive producer Clifton Campbell hinted that the show shall be renewed for Season 4.

Campbell said back then that they are leaving the Season 3 finale storyline open in the hopes that the show gets renewed for a fourth season.

The showrunner also explained that the only way to do a finale that has actual closure is if the studio and the network tell them that the show is over. He added that they are all very hopeful that it is not going to happen on “Sleepy Hollow” so they all planned on moving forward.

However, some critics are of the opinion that the reason why the Season 3 finale ended that way is because the producers and the showrunner are also being open to the possibility that “Sleepy Hollow” shall no longer be renewed after that.

Thus, it simply sacrificed one of its main characters which give the finale a closure of sorts, even though it frustrated fans of the show the world over.

sleepy hollow

The death of Abbie is actually a bad move on the part of the producers and showrunner if “Sleepy Hollow” is renewed for a fourth season because the Abbie/Ichabod partnership is the core of what makes the series work.

‘Ichabbie’ and their chemistry helped paper over a lot of the rougher bits and killing off Abbie just like that is a ridiculous creative decision because it betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of what the story of “Sleepy Hollow” is really about, notes the AV Club.

  1. Nicole had ASKED to leave the show. And because of the nature of the show, the only way to make her absence make any sense was to kill off her character. Granted they didn’t write it well AT ALL, but the actual decision to kill Abbie off was not a creative one. Nicole wanted out. I agree there should be no season four, but it’s not because Abbie was killed off. It’s because the writers and showrunner are absolutely horrible at their jobs and if Nicole gets to move on from their idiocy, Tom should be able to as well.

    1. who said that Nicole wanted off the show?….because I never read any quotes stating that…..just lackluster writers getting their butts handed to them by many of the fans

  2. I still love the show Sleepy Hollow. The first season was awesome. The second season good, but, got tiring with the Crane squabbles. Katrina just wasn’t a good character. The third season was just soooo different. It was missing something the whole time. I hated losing Abbie but that doesn’t mean I don’t have hope for it. I want it to come back. I think Tom Mison is an amazing Ichabod. I just miss his little modern day discoveries. He already knew too much in the third season. A lot of the fun was gone. But, he is still an amazing character and I think there is so much hope for it to come back and have a great season 4 if they can just get some great writers on board. Killing off Abbie was not a good thing but Nicole Beharie did want to leave . what else could they do..other than replace her. Please bring it back. I will always watch it,but, yeah this last season was a little boring and was missing some magic that it once had.

  3. Killing off Abbie wasn’t the show’s choice. Nicole Beharie was determined to leave so what else could they do?

  4. I LOVE SLEEPY HOLLOW AND WILL BE VERY UPSET TO NOT HAVE A SEASON 4. Abbie can still play a very important part in Crane’s part and Pandora could have lied. Who knows the twist that they can come up and I am looking forward to
