Almost seven years from the release of the seventh film in the horror-suspense movie franchise, “Saw,” an eighth installment is now in production and judging from recent behind-the-set photos, it promises to be another thrill-a-minute moment for its throngs of fans.
The eighth movie in the franchise is titled “Saw: Legacy” and it will come seven years from the time the last film of the series, entitled “Saw 3D,” hit cinemas back in 2010.
Several behind-the-set snapshots of filming for “Saw: Legacy” made it online and it features a graveyard setting with one headstone marked as John Kramer.
Every fan of the film franchise knows that John Kramer is the Jigsaw killer, who is responsible for the gruesome blood-and-guts death traps, which he also refers to as games.
It can be recalled that John Kramer already died in the third movie of the series, and the succeeding movies showed his henchman and followers carrying out his legacy. The title of the eighth movie seems to suggest that somebody would continue the legacy of Jigsaw but there may be more to it than just a blind follower.
The set photos also showed that Kramer’s grave has been dug up as his coffin was seen laying above ground. It is possible that his grave was robbed and the person who did it could be where the plotline of the “Saw 8” will revolve around.
Just like in the seven movies of the franchise, fans expect that “Saw: Legacy” shall feature the resurgence of the Jigsaw-style death traps that have been the signature highlights of the film series, reports Maxim.
From a low-budget thriller to a profitable franchise
Lionsgate is once again producing “Saw: Legacy” and the production company expects the film to do well at the box office just like its past seven films.
The production company released the low-budgeted psychological horror film, “Saw,” in 2004. But the movie managed to earn a great deal of profit, a strong box office result, and a solid fanbase, which eventually lead to the film’s equally successful sequels.
In fact, the “Saw” franchise led to the flight of the Hollywood careers of director James Wan, actor-writer Leigh Whannel, and actor Tobin Bell, who plays John Kramer a.k.a. Jigsaw, reports the Parent Herald.
“Saw 8” began filming in Canada on September 12 and finished on October 21, which makes it once again not a big-budgeted movie but plenty of box office potentials.
Based on previous rumors, “Saw: Legacy” is expected to be released in global theaters in October 2017 but everything remains as speculation pending the confirmation from Lionsgate.
There were reports saying that Lionsgate might announce “Saw 8” during the San Diego ComicCon held in July but it seems that it would happen in next year’s San Diego ComicCon and the movie will come out in theaters about two months thereafter.
Tied up all loose ends
“Saw 3D” seemed to have tied up all loose ends and finally put an end to the story of the Jigsaw killer, played by Tobin Bell, who had the eerie habit of trapping his victims in situations where they must choose to either live or die.
Apparently, the producers have decided to resurrect the franchise with an eighth movie reportedly titled “Saw: Legacy.”
The Jigsaw killer died in a couple of films in the franchise but for some reasons, he had a way of coming back to life over and over again so it would not be surprising if he comes out as the main villain again in “Saw 8.”
He should be. Because fans could identify with him and any “Saw” movie will not be complete without the Jigsaw killer on it, cite critics.
There are not many details thus far regarding “Saw: Legacy” but according to reports, the screenplay was written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, whose previous credits include “Piranha 3D” and “Sorority Row.”
