2014 is undoubtedly the year of the smart watches. First Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear, followed by LG and Motorola and now we have Apple’s iWatch. We will compare Apple’s smart watch against similar products from Motorola and Samsung today, based on the following criteria.
Design:
The primary difference between all three devices is the design. Apple is the first manufacturer to offer their smart watch in two distinct sizes, namely 38 mm and 42 mm respectively. The smaller of the two is also the smallest in the class, making it all the more desirable for people with thinner wrists.
Samsung’s Gear S, on the other hand, is the largest of the three. The Motorola Moto 360 and Apple iWatch feature similar dimensions. Apple is offering the maximum number of customization options so far with six watchbands, six finishes and three color options.
This makes the Apple iWatch a fashion accessory for both male and females. While the Moto 360 features a masculine design emulating classic analogue watches, the Samsung Gear S resembles a tiny smartphone held on by a wristband. Hence, apart from the Apple iWatch, the other devices are suitable for people only with large wrists.
Material:
Even though Samsung was immensely criticized for the plastic-feel of the S5, they have carried forward with similar material use on the Gear S while the iWatch and Moto 360 are composed out of stainless steel, giving them an edge in terms of refinement.
Compatibility:
The Apple iWatch is compatible with the latest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the present generation 5, 5C and 5S. The Moto 360 is compatible with devices running on Android 4.3 and higher. The Samsung Galaxy Gear S is capable of functioning independently of a smartphone and is capable of synchronizing with almost every latest device from the company.
Customization:
As present day customers are looking for customization options just as much as performance and practicality, Apple has taken special care to introduce the maximum number of customization capabilities on the iWatch. Both the Galaxy Gear S and Motorola Moto 360 fall behind in this category.
Health:
Apple focuses on the wearer’s health and has introduced various features monitoring the owner’s fitness. Apple plans on launching a specific variant of the iWatch, specially designed to monitor fitness and health. Even though the Moto 360 monitors health, it does not compare to what Apple has on offer.
Price:
The Apple iWatch is obviously the costliest of the three, priced at $350, followed by the Motorola Moto 360 at $250. Samsung, on the other hand, is yet to confirm the official pricing, although, experts believe it will be close to Apple’s present dough.

I like the Samsung S for it’s portability no phone required wonce it has been set up. I also love that curved screen and lots of pixels to make it pop. To me the apple looks boring and chunky. The 360 has a great look, I just have concerns over the Android operating system and power consumption.
I might try motor or Apple. Currently I have first generation samsung gear 1 and am completely turned off at how samsung gradually over the last year has stopped supporting the main app features that made that watch attractive such as watchstyler (last month) and this week Facebook quickview app no longer sends messages to the watch. My recommendation is go with a manufacturer that is committed supporting software upgrades on old devices especially if the watch is less than a couple years old.
That’s for that Bruno. This was my same experience with the Samsung phone line up. As excited as I am about the watch. I think I will have to give it a pass. Too bad though
