When ABC network officially announced the cancellation of the Canadian police drama TV series “Rookie Blue” on October 19, it no longer came as a surprise for the showrunners and the cast members.
It seems that they were pretty much expecting the non-renewal of the TV series after six seasons. The writings on the wall were practically obvious even before the network made the announcement.
And it seems that fans were expecting that “Rookie Blue” will no longer be back for Season 7 too as many of the questions were already answered and loose strings were also tied up. Best of all, show protagonists Police Officer Andy McNally, played by Missy Peregrym, tied the knot with Detective Sam Swarek, played by Ben Bass, details Enstarz.
Andy and Sam’s love story started way back in Season 1 so it is only fitting that during the Season 6 finale, they got married. There is no better way to end a series than with a happy ending. So it is likely that the showrunners and the cast members were already aware that “Rookie Blue” was only good for Season 6.
Knows the score as early as last year
In fact, it could also be possible that the showrunners and the cast members already know that the TV series was only good for six seasons only as early as last year after the end of Season 5 because Season 6 is merely the second half of the fifth season.
When the producers decided to split the 22 episodes of Season 5 into 11 episodes for the fifth season and the remaining 11 episodes for the next season, they are likely aware that there will be no renewal after Season 6.
Filming for Season 6 has been completed early last year or even before Season 5 premiered on Global in Canada and ABC in the US so technically, there was no filming done at all for Season 6 as those 11 episodes were supposed to be for the fifth season only.
Another obvious reason for the cancellation of “Rookie Blue” is its lowest ratings in its six seasons on the air.
Season 6 of “Rookie Blue” posted an average of 3.5 million viewers for its 11-episode run. While it is a good figure, it was actually the lowest for the TV series during its six-year run on the small screen.
The TV series did maintain its loyal viewers, but it actually recorded its lowest ratings during its last few episodes on ABC, giving its direct competition in the 10 pm timeslot, CBS’s “Under the Dome” a clear advantage in viewership.
Saying goodbye to an important part of her life
Among the cast members of “Rookie Blue,” actress Missy Peregrym was the first to speak about the decision of ABC to cancel the TV series, details Enstarz in another report.
Peregrym took to her personal blog to share her thoughts about the news and admitted to having struggled accepting it first.
She said that she spent a good deal of time to grieve and say goodbye to an important part of her life. But she says that despite the sad news, she has decided to stay positive about it.
Missy said that all her tears inevitably turned to laughter as she remembered the moments of the last six years of “Rookie Blue.” She added that she is a better person because of each person that she has managed to work with in the show. And she is proud that everyone in “Rookie Blue,” including herself, brought their ‘A’ game when they did the TV series.
While most of the rumors and speculations last month indicate that “Rookie Blue” is unlikely to be renewed for Season 7, there was a glimmer of hope that it might.
Accordingly, the fact that showrunner Tassie Cameron relinquished her post recently to Sherry White means that something might really be in the works and “Rookie Blue” might be renewed for Season 7.
