‘Rookie Blue’ Season 6 Incorporates Life Triangle Instead of Love Triangle of Characters, Says Showrunner

The cops of 15 Division Precinct are back in action! The Canadian police drama TV series, now in its sixth season, finally hit US television and premiered on ABC on June 25, about a month after its Canadian premiere. Six episodes have already aired in Canada and they are only five episodes away from the season finale. Despite the gap, spoilers for American viewers were considerably in short supply because the cast and crew worked very hard not to spill the beans so easily.

Just when things are going well again for Officer Andy McNally and Detective Sam Swarek, last season’s most shocking moment was definitely when Marlo Cruz dropped the bomb that she is carrying Sam’s baby, much to Andy’s chagrin. Sam and Marlo had a short-lived relationship when Andy and Sam called it quits.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Tassie Cameron confirms that Marlo is indeed carrying her ex lover’s child adding the baby drama is not their way of severing relationships on the show. Cameron clarifies that this season, they will use the baby plot to incorporate a ‘life triangle’ on characters instead of a ‘love triangle’ which means Andy may have to accept the fact that she is going to be a step-mom soon if she wants a relationship with Sam for the long haul.

Speaking to ETonline, Missy Peregrym reveals that Andy is not going to be anywhere near calm and collected in dealing with Marlo’s pregnancy this season. Although her alter ego is in emotional crisis, the 33-year old Canadian actress says the baby drama is a brilliant plot twist for the show, adding Season 5 was one of her favorites.

Another major plot is last season’s evidence room bombing in the police station which is believed to be an inside job. Producers tease fans that more of who’s behind and the explosion and why the evidence room was targeted will unfold during the later episodes. In an interview with Zap2it, Peregrym says fans don’t know who to trust anymore especially with positions changing, a few characters getting in sticky and rough situations and some seemingly having their own agendas.

Season 6 premiere titled “Open Windows” kicked off three weeks after the explosion with everyone returning to their daily grind and Sam figuring out what to do after finding out about that he is fathering a child with her ex.

Meanwhile, Gregory Smith is again ready to ditch Officer Dov Epstein’s uniform to go behind cameras. Smith has directed two episodes for Season 6, the first of which is episode 3 entitled “Uprising” which will feature a riot in prison causing Andy and newly-transferred cop Juliet to work together.

rookie blue

With Season 6’s finale only five episodes away in Canadian TV and no confirmation of a renewal being announced so far, speculations are rife that fans will get to see the rookie cops on what could possibly be their final season is on the rise. Normally ABC officially announces the show’s renewal by this time if the show is going for another 11-episode run.
