Red Dead Redemption 2 Plotline Set 12 Years Before ‘Red Dead Redemption’

If latest reports are to be believed regarding the plotline of the open world Western action-adventure video game “Red Dead Redemption 2,” it is not going to be a sequel but a prequel of the original game, the “Red Dead Redemption.”

The information is actually based on a disclosure made recently by a Reddit user saying that “Red Dead Redemption 2” will be set 12 years prior to “Red Dead Redemption,” which really makes the upcoming video game a prequel, notes Crossmap.

The Reddit user, who uses the name AnonDN1978, was actually the same one who revealed at the online public forum site that game developer Rockstar Games has been working on the title for several years now.

In fact, he was also the one who said that the official title of the upcoming game shall be “Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the West.” He also revealed that main protagonist John Marston in “Red Dead Redemption” will not be coming back in the next game, which makes some sense because the timeline “Red Dead Redemption 2” is 12 years earlier.

If that is the case, then the previous rumors that Jack Marston, the son of John Marston, will be the main protagonist for “Red Dead Redemption 2” is not accurate at all because his character would just be too young if the game is set a dozen years before “Red Dead Redemption.”

AnonDN1978 also disclosed that “Red Dead Redemption 2” shall have three additional playable characters. Accordingly, the first two characters will be Irish and Seth. Irish is said to be bank teller from Kansas City while Seth is someone from Ireland who migrated to America.

The goal of the two main characters is to look for hidden treasure. Both characters will meet in Tumbleweed, Texas. The third character will apparently be created by the players, and will be a gun-for-hire of sorts.

Values high quality of work

Meanwhile, game publisher Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that it will go with developer Rockstar Games when it comes to the launching of franchise games, clarifying earlier reports that it plans to annualize the rollout of Rockstar Games franchises.

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games, said that it is always better for them to create demand and anticipation for non-sport titles to bring out the highest quality of work on its video games. He believes that it will be difficult to achieve with annual releases, cites the PlayStation Lifestyle.

He believes that sports titles like the NBA 2K, the WWE2K, or the FIFA franchises deserved to be annualized because they follow a regular season year in and year out but that is not how it goes for their permanent franchises.

Zelnick explained that while they may have an up-and-down profit bottom line over the years, the fact of the matter is that the high points more than offset the down points of their returns so it is like them having an annualized business just the same.

He said that it is better that way for Rockstar Games than doing it yearly and burning their intellectual properties by reducing its quality because their development teams are pressed for time in coming up with great games.

In fact, Zelnick pointed out that none of the Rockstar’s franchises like “Grand Theft Auto,” “Red Dead Redemption” and “Max Payne” follows a set schedule precisely because of its long development cycles.

A dynamic multiplayer mode

Recent reports also have it that Rockstar is currently looking to hire a network programmer who specializes in a wide range of gameplay mechanics for an open world game. While the job ad did not specifically mention that the network programmer will be for a certain game, many believe that it is for “Red Dead Redemption 2.”

The new position in Rockstar’s development team will apparently be in-charge in the integration of dynamic multiplayer mode into all areas of gameplay of “Red Dead Redemption 2” as well as its complex open-world environments.
