Director JJ Abrams of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” fame has not only confirmed last month that a movie about the survival horror first-person shooter video game franchise “Half-Life” is in development, the same is true as well for the movie adaptation of the first-person shooter puzzle video game series “Portal.”
Interestingly, both franchises under American game development company Valve Corporation are rumored to be coming out with their respective third installments soon or if not in the near future.
While “Half-Life 3” already has a 2018 speculated release date, “Portal 3” does not have one yet, which means that it may come out after 2018 or farther down the road.
That being said, it is likely that the release of the “Portal” movie adaptation will spark interest in the game and perhaps even pressure Valve to work on the third installment of the video game so that it can finally quench the gamer enthusiasm and thirst.
Working on the storylines of two movies
Director Abrams made the big reveal about the movies on “Half-Life” and “Portal” last month while he was promoting the movie “10 Cloverfield Lane.” He said that the two video games are currently in development as well as the movies about them. He said that they already have writers who are now working on the possible storylines for the “Half-Life” and “Portal” movies, cites the Independent of UK.
With the way “Portal” is played, it is likely that the movie adaptation will have the element of the “Looper” film shown a couple of years back and it would be a sci-fi film considering its dystopian setting and teleporting blaster guns.
Incidentally, Dan Trachtenberg, Director of “10 Cloverfield Lane,” broke into the business because of his short fan film entitled “Portal: No Escape” so having him helm the “Portal” movie would not be much of a big adjustment for him.
Critics believe that “Portal” has very ingenious puzzles, where the developer can still do so much with the concept. Its storyline is also good, details the Metro of UK.
Actually, “Portal” storylines are unequivocal proofs that it can be expanded further. The delay in the release of “Portal 3” is actually giving some gamers the excuse not to buy their PlayStation 4 consoles yet. But once the game comes out, they would certainly purchase Sony’s current generation gaming platform to be able to enjoy or play the game.
Keeping silent about it
Valve Corporation has not said anything official about the first-person shooter puzzle video game since it applied for a trademark in October 2013.
Fans and gamers were expecting that Valve would make an announcement during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2014 but nothing happened.
Since then, much of the focus on Valve was on its highly-anticipated multiplayer zombie shooter video game “Left 4 Dead 3” and the first-person shooter horror survival game “Half-Life-3.”
However, during the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2016 held early this year in Las Vegas, Nevada, Taiwanese tech giant HTC announced its Vive Pre, a second-generation developer kit for its virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display complete with a refined form factor and improvements to the chaperone system.
Interestingly, HTC has compiled and showcased a brand new trailer for the kit during the CES 2016 that run for about 90 seconds.
What caught the attention of fans and gamers is that the trailer actually showed a scene featuring a woman floating in mid-air. After remaining still for a few seconds, she raised her arms, which causes the walls on her sides to bend and blasts a hole in the wall in front of her, seemingly through telekinesis.
The woman is wearing half of an orange jumpsuit, folded around her waist and a vest for her top. While it is only her back that is shown, the woman looks exactly like Chell, the protagonist of Valve’s “Portal” video game franchise.
That’s in addition to the fact that her explosion in the scene created a portal of sorts into another dimension.
