The season finale of “Outlander” was full of twists and turns. Despite a lot of drama, the finale satisfied a lot of fans because many questions were answered.
People reports that the finale finally caught up to where the premiere began – Jamie forcing Claire to go through the stones and to her first husband Frank for her own safety before the disastrous Battle of Culloden began.
Perhaps the first shocking moment in the season finale was when Sam Heughan’s Jamie rammed a knife into his uncle, Graham McTavish’s Dougal. Caitronal Balfe’s Claire saw it with her very own eyes and was even the one who urged her husband to do so.
The couple was left with no choice but to kill Dougal after he overheard their scandalous plan to kill Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Horrified at what they did, the couple set Roman Berrux’ Fergus away from the battle with the deed to Lallybroch, giving it to Jamie’s nephew and keeping it in the family in case something happened to him.
Lotte Verbeek’s Geillis also made a surprising return. Brianna ran into her while going through Roger’s father’s journals. Geillis goes by Gillian Edgars now, since it was before she traveled back in time.
Fans were expecting the character to make a comeback, but they didn’t know how. Upon Geillis’ return, Claire tells Richard Rankin’s Roger that she believes that he is Geillis’ and Dougal’s child.
Probably the most shocking event in the second season’s finale was the 20 “Outlander” years in the making.
The 90-minute episode picked up in 1968, 20 years after Claire reunited with Frank. She had returned to Scotland with her grown daughter, Sophie Skelton’s Brianna after Frank had passed away to attend Rev. Wakefield’s funeral.
Claire and Brianna then met the Reverend’s son Roger, who is actually a descendant of the Mackenzie’s.
Jamie apparently didn’t die in Culloden despite Claire accepting what had happened after she returned to her present day ahead of the battle.
Brianna was also suspicious of her mother’s constant disappearing acts and enlisted Roger in helping her figure out what happened to her parents.
Brianna, through reading the journals, found out that Claire went missing for three years and from that, she put the pieces together that Frank Randall is not her real father.
Upon confrontation, Claire finally confessed everything to her daughter, but Brianna didn’t believe her. It took Gillian killing her husband to be able to go through the stones for Brianna to believe her mother. It was then when Claire decided to go back through the stones to find Jamie.
“Outlander” has been renewed for at least two more seasons. Producer Matt Roberts recently told The Hollywood Reporter that they haven’t stopped working and they want a straight over from Season 2 to Season 3.
Roberts teased fans saying that the #Droughtlander won’t be as long as fans expect, but they haven’t really set an actual premiere date for Season 3 yet.
The third season will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s book “Voyager” wherein Jamie and Claire will be going to sea again, but they’re going much further than across the channel of France.
Before the two venture across waters, the Season 3 premiere must at least revolve around their reunion. Also, now that Brianna and Roger have been introduced, fans can expect to see more of them in the next season. In the novel, the two become more than friends.
Series creator Ronald Moore admits that filming Season 3 will be more difficult than the previous seasons, but assures fans that it will be worth it. The fourth season will adapt storylines from Gabaldon’s “Autumn of Drums.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the season finale, Moore reveals that he’s had the finale in his mind at the beginning of the season adding that the 20-year leap was a big risk but it was well executed by the cast and crew.
