‘Outlander’ Lead Stars Share What’s in Store for Claire and Jamie in the Upcoming Second Season

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, who plays Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser, respectively, in the historical drama series “Outlander,” have recently spoken about what will happen to their characters in the upcoming second season.

In an interview with TV Guide, both Heughan and Balfe discussed the plot of the second season including a possible danger that Claire and Jamie might face in the hands of the season’s new villain, Comte St. Germain.

Starz has revealed that the second season of the historical drama will focus on Claire and Jamie’s journey in France after their traumatic experience in Scotland.

The two have relocated to Paris in an attempt to prevent the Jacobite risings by subverting the funds that King Louis XV of France is providing the pretender Charles Stuart, played by Andrew Gower.

The network also recently revealed that the American-British drama will return on April 9 and will consist of 13 episodes, three episodes short of its first season. It is based on Diana Gabaldon’s second book called “Dragonfly in Amber” in her “Outlander” novel series.

Starz has already released a promotional video for the second season where Jamie is promising that he and Claire will always find their way back to each other.

By the end of the clip, Claire is shown back in the original timeline lying in the hospital bed.

In the interview, Balfe shared that Claire’s big mouth will get her into trouble straight away.

She adds that when she gets into trouble, they haven’t even gotten off the dock yet which hints that the season premiere will see her having a difficult time adjusting to Paris.

However, the 36-year-old actress says that Claire’s big mouth is also responsible for the fans to meet Comte St. Germain, played by Stanley Weber.

This means that Comte’s villainous acts will immediately begin once the couple sets their feet in France.

Meanwhile, Heughan revealed that the situation in Season 2 will be a lot different compared to their past adventures in Scotland.

The Scottish actor says that Claire and Jamie will find Paris just about familiar but unsettling. He adds that in Paris, the battle is more of politics and less in the field.

Unlike in Season 1 where the backstabbing was literally with swords, the upcoming season will see battles being fought in the form of alliances and hidden agendas and that’s something that Claire and Jamie aren’t used to do, but they must find a way to fit in to achieve their mission.

The 35-year-old actor adds that this season will see more backstabbing and darkness as there are some pretty dangerous characters involved.

Fans are also wondering if the season will premiere in the 1968 or 18th-century timeline. Those who have read the novel know that “Dragonfly in Amber” begins in 1968.

However, showrunner Ron Moore hinted that things are bound to change when translating a novel into television.

Interestingly, after Sam and Caitriona’s interview about Season 2’s plot, Starz uploaded a follow-up video where the two answer fans’ questions.

In the two-minute video, fans got to hear humorous pieces of information including Heughan saying that Balfe will be voted off “Survivor” first because she is the Alpha female and obviously a huge threat.

A fan also asked them to make impressions of their characters. Scotland Now notes that there are a few great laughs in the clip as it showcases the great friendship both lead stars have created while working on the period drama.

Aside from the French treatment this season, fans will also be introduced to a slew of new characters. One of the highly anticipated is Brianna, the daughter of Jamie and Claire, who will be portrayed by Sophie Skelton.
