‘Mission: Impossible 5’ Topples ‘Mission: Impossible 3’ as the Best Film in the 20-Year-Old Franchise

The latest “Mission: Impossible” film from Tom Cruise is still showing in theaters and raking in money in the box office but from what some movie critics say, “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” is the best film in the franchise yet.

According to Overmetal, “Mission: Impossible 5” has pretty much toppled the reign of “Mission: Impossible 3” as the best film in the movie franchise since it was shown in 2006. If “Mission: Impossible 5” is to be the final film in the series, Tom Cruise and the producers have certainly saved the best for last.

But it is unlikely that it will be the last and given how the film is currently doing excellently well in the box office these days, an installment should be likely in the works a few months down the road. That has been the trend in Hollywood these days – milk the most out of successful film franchises.

A simple TV adaptation

The first “Mission: Impossible” film came out in 1996 as a simple TV adaptation but slowly evolved into a true director’s franchise, as each movie of the series has had its own style and atmosphere, “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” included.

The first movie has spawned a franchise that is now running on its 20th year and it seems unlikely that it will end this year with the massive success of the fifth installment of the series.

Credit Tom Cruise for making each film of the series truly unique, making viewers see five different films in the same universe but feeling different from each other.

However, based on critics ranking of the “Mission: Impossible” films, it is “Mission: Impossible 3” which has held the reign as the best in the series since 2006. It is followed by the first “Mission: Impossible” film, then “Mission: Impossible 4,” with “Mission: Impossible 2” bringing up the rear.

But all films are great and viewers can all vouch for that. The rankings were just made on their respective level of greatness.

“Mission: Impossible 3” was selected because it took the action-centric focus of the movie and weaves it into the team-based conspiracy style of the first movie through a relentless narrative.

The Vatican sequence of the movie is simply perfect. The other action sequences in the film were just fantastic, giving the audiences the perfect amount of escalating tension without going over the top.

Elevating it further beyond other films is the emotional stakes that it had put into, which other films does not have as it has put Ethan’s personal life in the front and center that had him nearly in tears for almost the entire second half of the narrative.

A big hit overseas

Meanwhile, “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” has been doing excellently well in foreign movie charts for the past three weeks, reports Variety.

The movie has reportedly earned $46.1 million over the past week and pushed its worldwide global haul to $373.4 million. It is expected to easily hit $400 million within the next few days.

Running at second place on the foreign movie chart is the Chinese film “Go Away Mr. Tumor,” which is a drama about a cartoonist with a terminal illness. The movie earned a respectable $21.5 million.

Third place goes to the South Korean thriller film “Veteran” which netted $18.2 million, followed by “Fantastic Four” at fourth spot with earnings of $16.2 million.

Rounding up the top five is Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions” which generated $15 million in the box office in the past week, pushing its worldwide haul of $957.4 million, good for 29th spot in the list of highest-grossing movies of all time.
