One year after a horrific ski accident in Meribel in the French Alps, seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher is showing signs that he is already recognizing the people close to him.
He has already waken up from a six-month coma after the accident. While he still cannot talk, Michael can already communicate through his eyes.
The Telegraph reports that tears roll down from the eyes of the F1 driver every time he hears the familiar voices of his wife and his children.
Michael will be turning 46 on January 10, 2015 and he will be spending his birthday with his wife Corinne, daughter Gina Maria, and son Mick, at their home in Lake Geneva in Switzerland. He has been recuperating at home since leaving the hospital in September 2014.
His wife, who has been with his side all through his ordeal for the last 13 months admits that Michael’s recovery would take a long time. Despite earlier prognosis that the Formula One champion would not fully recover to his state before the ski accident, his wife continues to remain hopeful.
Manifesting emotions through tears
The Mirror also reported that fellow former driver Philippe Streiff confirmed that Schumacher is starting to show recognition and can demonstrate emotions.
It was actually the Italian newspaper Corriere della Serra which first reported that Schumacher is now capable of demonstrating his emotions through tears.
The F1 driver is often moved to tears every time he hears familiar sounds, particularly the voices of his loved ones. The Italian newspaper wrote that Schumi cries often and sometimes mysteriously too.
Apart from his wife and children, Michael also cries when he hears the bark of his dogs. The newspaper went on to say that there is life for every teardrop that Michael Schumacher sheds because he is obviously fighting and wants to be alive again.
He still cannot speak nor move his arms but he can already react to external stimuli through his eyes.
There has been a report by a car magazine that Schumacher can already sit but it remains unconfirmed and sounds more like a rumor at this time.
Hope for full recovery continues
While earlier prognosis by attending doctors tend to indicate that Michael would not be able to fully recover from his condition given the massiveness of the head injuries he sustained during the ski accident, his family, friends, and fans remain hopeful for his full recovery.
And the latest report of Schumi manifesting his emotions through tears gives them one very good reason to be optimistic about his chances.
Streiff based his latest information from his recent communication with Michael’s wife and surgeon Gerard Saillant, whom he also know personally for having survived and recovered from a racing accident in 1989. Streiff became a quadriplegic after the accident. He was paralyzed because of partial loss of limbs and torso.
