Jeff Mayweather, the uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr., has the explanation why the rematch between his nephew and Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao would not be happening anytime soon.
He believes that Pacquiao was not man enough to admit that he lost to Money during their match in June 2015 and even put the unanimous decision then in question.
It can be recalled that Mayweather won over Pacquaio via unanimous decision during their ‘Fight of the Century’ in what is regarded as the richest boxing fight in history.
However, after the bout, Pacquiao, claimed that he was robbed of the victory as he believed he threw and landed more punches than Mayweather did.
He also revealed later that he fought with an injured right shoulder that required surgery days after the fight, and has since insisted that he remains open for a rematch, reports ABS-CBN News.
Accordingly, immediately after the fight, Mayweather initially seemed willing to offer Pacquiao a rematch, but subsequently changed his mind, calling the Pacman a sore loser who repeatedly made excuses for his defeat.
Talks of a rematch surface from time to time and rumors spread once more when the now-retired Mayweather was at ringside during Pacquiao’s fight against Jessie Vargas last November in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pacquiao even made a tease on Instagram shortly after his fight with Vargas when he posted a jacket showing a picture of himself on its inside and that of Mayweather on the other side.
Shooting down fight with McGregor
Not only did Jeff Mayweather doused cold water on whatever hopes of a rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather from happening, he also shot down the rumors about his nephew going up against UFC martial arts superstar Conor McGregor.
Mayweather and McGregor have been taking shots at each other repeatedly on social media, but Jeff said that it is all just for show.
He said that his nephew was just toying with the media with regards to the supposed McGregor fight.
Jeff Mayweather explained that Floyd Jr. would get prosecuted for fighting Conor McGregor. He also pointed out that it would be a fight that’s so easy, it would be ridiculous.
Like his nephew, Jeff believes that McGregor is simply trying to make money off the famous boxer’s name. McGregor wants to get paid, just like every other fighter that mentions Floyd’s name, he said.
He also cited that every fighter that mentions Floyd is not saying it because it’s more about beating Money but more about the payday.
Boxing fans and critics complained about Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting Andre Berto, who is a two-time world champion, and Money just toyed with him, cites Jeff Mayweather.
So talking about a guy, referring to McGregor, who has not had an amateur fight in 20 years, he would not stand a chance against Money, adds Jeff
Frustrated over not making the fight
Meanwhile, WBC and WBO super light welterweight champion Terence Crawford expressed his frustration that his desired fight with Manny Pacquiao is not going to happen, notes Boxing News Online.
While Crawford is extremely talented as one of the world’s leading super light welterweights after defeating Viktor Postol, it seems that the Pacquiao camp is making it tough for him to agree to a fight.
Bob Arum believes that if the fight between Crawford and Pacquiao would happen, it is going to take place in the latter half of this year while Pacquiao considers going on a world tour and fighting beyond American shores.
Crawford also denied he has demanded US$7 million to fight Pacquiao. He recently posted on social media that he never asked for US$7 million to fight Manny Pacquiao.
