The biggest question back then as regards the possibility of an “Iron Man 4” film was the age of Robert Downey Jr., who has been playing Tony Stark and Iron Man since 2008.
The actor is now 51 years old and given the release dates of “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” in 2018 and 2019, respectively, the earliest that he can do an “Iron Man 4” film will be in 2019. He will be 54 years old by then.
At 54, he may no longer be as agile and as sturdy as he is now but upon seeing himself as a 20-year-old in “Captain America: Civil War,” Robert Downey Jr. suddenly realized that there is still plenty that is left in his tank to possibly do an “Iron Man 4.”
There is a cool scene at the beginning of “Captain America: Civil War” where Tony Stark used some sort of technology to relive his last conversation with his parents before they died.
Not only did the scene featured two different Tony Starks in the same shot, it also wowed audiences with a spot-on recreation of RDJ’s 1980s appearance via Tony’s younger self, details Screen Rant.
It was actually the work of “Captain America: Civil War” visual effects supervisor Dan DeLeeuw who said that Downey’s roles back in the mid-80s played a part in its re-creation. He said that his team collated Downey’s looks from the 1985 sci-fi comedy film “Weird Science,” the 1986 Rodney Dangerfield farce “Back to School,” and the 1987 drug-addiction melodrama “Less Than Zero” to design the younger Tony Stark. And as it turned out, it was a success.
He wants Mel Gibson
After the box-office success of “Captain America: Civil War,” Robert Downey Jr. was quoted as saying that he is now open to the possibility of doing an “Iron Man 4” and he wants Mel Gibson to direct the film, if ever. Gibson is currently directing the wartime drama “Hacksaw Ridge.”
It was Shane Black, the “Iron Man 3” director, who revealed recently that RDJ wants Mel Gibson to direct him for “Iron Man 4,” reports Jobs & Hire.
Black said that Mel was great to Robert Downey Jr. and he has been really nice to a lot of people. The “Braveheart” actor is also a great guy who understands that his new directing project is actually quite interesting.
The “Iron Man 3” director said that RDJ previously mellowed on pushing for “Iron Man 4” but it seems that he has changed his mind after seeing an 80s version of himself in “Captain America: Civil War.”
From previously stating that he will be distancing himself from future Marvel projects, Robert Downey Jr. was quoted as saying early this month that he will continue to make “Iron Man” movies for another two years, at least, opening up the possibility indeed for an “Iron Man 4.”
Pepper Potts to the Rescue
With the possibility of an “Iron Man 4” now looming large, there are speculations going around that Pepper Potts could be highlighted in the fourth installment of the franchise.
Many are saying that Pepper Potts, played in the franchise by Gwyneth Paltrow, is very important in the series because without Pepper, Iron Man is nothing.
In the Marvel Comics from 2008 to 2012, Pepper Pots has actually evolved to become a superheroine herself by wearing an armored suit designed specifically for her by Tony Stark. She had an alias of Rescue, details Movie Pilot.
Just like Iron Man, Rescue was also regarded in the comics as badass when she’s out there saving the world.
However, Rescue’s arc in the Marvel cinematic universe would have to deviate from the comics, as her adventures were heavily intertwined with Norman Osborn, who became Green Goblin and Spider-Man’s nemesis.
She has also developed feelings for J.A.R.V.I.S. in the comics which is no longer possible in the MCU since J.A.R.V.I.S. has already metamorphosed into Vision and he seems to have fallen for Wanda, the Scarlet Witch.
In any case, having Rescue on the side of Iron Man for “Iron Man 4” is by far the most exciting plotline offered for the movie which would likely wake up from its stupor now that Robert Downey Jr. expressed interest in doing it. It’s up to Marvel Studios if it sees it that way too.
“Iron Man” director Jon Favreau revealed recently that he cannot fathom the idea that another actor will be portraying the role of the superhero character in the future outside of Robert Downey Jr.
Favreau believes that Robert Downey Jr. has made the character iconic in the MCU by deliciously portraying the genius, billionaire, philanthropist, and playboy Tony Stark, the alter ego of Iron Man.
The director made the comment in light of recent reports saying that the actor will be passing the baton of the character for a possible fourth stand-alone “Iron Man” movie, even though it is not in the cards of Marvel Studios at the moment.
Favreau said that he just can’t wrap his head around the idea that another actor would be playing the role of Tony Stark / Iron Man and actually do better than Robert Downey Jr.

No other actor can possibly do better than Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Iron Man/Tony Stark. I’m so glad to hear that Robert Downey Jr. is eager to do one more Iron Man movie. I think Jon Favreau should direct Iron Man 4 instead of Mel Gibson. This time Jon Favreau should direct Iron Man 4 without studio interference unlike what happened during the production of Iron Man 2. Shane Black should stay as far away as possible from the making of Iron Man 4.
