It must be hard being a “GTA” fan right now, as there is no shortage of rumors about both the future DLC of the current game, as well as the potential plans of the studio for “GTA 6”. A lot has been said over the last few months and while some claim to have exclusive insider information about the developments behind the studio’s doors, pretty much nobody but Rockstar themselves know the truth. And of course, some players don’t really mind this situation either, as following the rumor mill is just part of the fun for them.
The rumors about “GTA 6” are starting to cross into the territory of outrageous, and it’s probably a good idea to take everything with a grain of salt right now. There is active speculation about petty much every aspect of the game, from its setting, to its protagonist(s) and even the technology that could be utilized. The last part has been enjoying a lot of attention in particular lately, with some peculiar claims roaming around. There are rumors that Rockstar could already be developing the title for next-gen consoles, and while some players got very excited by this suggestion, we are not sure how plausible it actually is.
There are several problems with this theory that make it hard to believe, and for the most part, we would probably categorize that rumor as something that can safely be ignored. For onw thing, the rumors claim that Rockstar already have access to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two, and those are the main development targets for the title. But as some experts are pointing out, it’s a bit ridiculous to believe that both companies would already be so far ahead in the development of their next console platforms that they are already sending out development units to studios. It sounds particularly strange in light of the knowledge that the last installments in both console lines only came out relatively recently.
“Recently”, because major consoles traditionally have a 10-year lifecycle. It’s not sure if the new generations are going to follow the same principle or if they will come out more quickly, but even if we go by the latter suggestion, it’s still too early for anyone to have their hands on the consoles.
On the other hand, the development resources of Rockstar are not unlimited either, and we don’t know how likely it is that the studio could be working on another major release right now, let alone one ok a next-gen platform. The company most likely already has a lot on their plate with the work they’re doing on the DLC for “GTA 5” and keeping the game balanced, so even if they want to begin working on the next game, the most they could realistically do is likely to lay down the initial plans for the game. Beyond that, it would be too obvious by their delayed releases if they really did have something else going on behind the scenes.
Other than that, the rumors have been pretty standard. Most are talking about the location and setting of the game, but we haven’t seem any new interesting suggestions since the rumors that the game could be set in the 60s and show a real-life location. Players also want to see more of the multiple protagonist idea, so that’s another rumor that has been enjoying a lot of attention. Whether it actually has any legitimacy remains to be seen, and the same goes for the suggestion that the game could also introduce a female character.
