It should soon be possible to jailbreak devices running iOS 8.2, at least that’s what the latest rumors are claiming. And while the procedure should be relatively straightforward, as it usually is with jailbreaking iOS devices, there will still be a need for some initial preparation beforehand. Users who are planning to jailbreak their devices as soon as the tool has been released should know what they can do to speed up the process.
Stefan Esser, a prominent developer in the jailbreak community, recently said that he suspects that the TaiG team are currently waiting until the 2015 Mobile Security Summit, before they release the official jailbreak for iOS 8.2. The Summit is scheduled for March 27, and it looks like it would be a great opportunity for the team to release their jailbreak tool, which they claim they have already developed and prepared for release.
The cat and mouse game between Apple and jailbreak developers has been continuing, after Apple removed the latest security exploits in iOS 8.1.3 and brought the fix over to iOS 8.2 as well. It’s not currently known if TaiG were relying on this specific vulnerability for their own jailbreaking methods, but if that’s true, then it might mean that TaiG are currently stuck and can’t produce a new jailbreak.
One of the first things a user should do in preparation for jailbreaking their device is to perform a complete system backup through iTunes. This should include everything that the user cares about, and it will be the quickest tool to restore the device in case it needs a factory reset after a failed jailbreak. Another important detail that should be saved is the set of jailbreak tweaks that the user might have applied to the device – iTunes obviously doesn’t collect those in its backup, so the user must take care of that part manually.
Last but not least, how a user installs the iOS 8.2 update is quite important. The update should be installed via a cable connection to the computer, and not over the air. According to reports, OTA updates can be more difficult to jailbreak and can cause specific problems for users who’re trying to jailbreak their devices, so they should be avoided. While it is still possible to fix the problem in some cases, most of the time an OTA update would make it unnecessarily complicated to perform the jailbreak.
With all that in mind, we can just wait to see if the jailbreak for iOS 8.2 will be announced over the next few days, as the current rumors are claiming – hopefully, users will get the opportunity to unlock their devices soon enough.
