“Dishonored 2” was confirmed after many rumors, and now the speculation has moved to another topic, the kinds of features that the game is going to bring to the table. It’s pretty much been confirmed that the game is going to expand the gameplay of the original significantly and introduce various new ideas that spice things up, but we don’t know the exact extent of the new changes. However, some bits of information have started to find their way to the public, and it’s starting to look really interesting.
One of the more interesting new ideas will be the introduction of a new character to the gameplay. The game will now have two protagonists, and while there will be a significant split between them, they won’t be split between sequential segments. Rather, the player will get to choose which character they want to use and they can then play the game from that perspective.
This will obviously add a lot of replayability to an already pretty interesting title, although the exact details of the new character’s implementation remain a mystery. What we do know is that she’ll be none other than Emily Kaldwin, one of the more interesting NPCs from the original.
Emily was practically raised by Corvo, the original protagonist, after her mother was murdered right in front of her eyes. She then started to follow in the footsteps of the mysterious assassin, and now she’s obviously learned a trick or two of her own if players are going to get a chance to play as her in the new game.
The decision to include her character as a playable one wasn’t random. Apparently, the designers of the game wanted to play on the morality aspect of the player’s choices, letting them know that Emily is always watching, sometimes even in a more straightforward way. And because of this, playing as her will likely follow a slightly different set of mechanics, as the game won’t be so heavily focused on spilling as much blood as possible.
Indeed, some players have reported that the knowledge that Emily is watching them shaped their actions in a significant way in the last game, and this should be even more interesting now that they can actually see everything through her own eyes. It’s been rumored that her playstyle will feature so much combat and direct attacks, but will rather focus on stealth, flanking and avoiding enemies.
In other words, playing as Emily might feel more like a “Thief” game rather than “Dishonored”, but most players seem to be quite happy with that news, instead of the opposite which was expected by some critics. The point is that some players wanted to experience the original game in a stealth-driven way, but the way it was designed made it very difficult to do that.
The original “Dishonored” really did focus too much on killing everyone in sight in order to progress. The game did try to give the player some choices, but they always felt forced and it was usually strongly implied that someone has to be killed in order to continue.
We don’t know if there will be any differences in the way the plot progresses with the player playing as Emily, but that’s very likely. In fact, it’s possible that the game might feature significant differences in the storyline between the two characters in order to improve its replayability factor.
