Deadpool 2: Big Names Overlooked for Cable

The first Deadpool movie was great. In fact, we have all loved it and we can’t wait to see the next part of his story. But right now, we have some intel on it, and a bit of it says that Cable will be in the movie, however, the big question was who is going to get to portray Cable in the sequel.

Well, as we all know, the innovative origin story about Deadpool, that hit the theaters in February of the previous year, just before Valentine’s Day, was a huge hit. It was a superhero movie most people did not even know they wanted and it exceeded everybody’s expectations. Not to mention it made the studio even richer than before. Deadpool turned out to be one of the most profitable movies ever.

It was created with a budget of $58 million, which is a lot of money, but, compared to other superhero movies with a high demand for special effects, it is basically pocket money (Civil War had a budget of $250 million, just like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and it raked in some serious cash, with box office numbers coming above $760 million.

With numbers like these, it was fairly obvious that Fox would never let the opportunity for any sequels slide which made the fans of the movie really happy.

In a fairly original origin story (see what I did there?) we have seen the story of Wade Wilson falling in love and then leaving to get treatment through one of the shady, super-soldier experimental treatments as a series of flashbacks while we followed the story of his revenge and the rescue of his girlfriend Vanessa (portrayed by Morena Baccarin), and it worked wonderfully.

And after a spectacle like that, we are all seriously curious about what we will get to see in the sequel.

So, what do we know about it?

Well, the information we got is far from complete since the movie is in the earliest stages of creation. However, we can piece together some of story from the following information:

Recurring Characters

Well, it is rather obvious that we will get to see Ryan in the body-tight suit once more, however, we also have confirmation of Vanessa, Weasel, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead being in the movie, and, from the looks of it, nobody is getting replaced. Almost forgot to mention. The most beloved character of the first movie will be back with us. Karan Soni will return to his role of Dopinder the cab driver and the fans will rejoice.

A New Director

Unfortunately, it seems like Tim Miller will not be returning to direct the sequel as he reportedly had creative differences with Ryan and decided to leave the project.

New Characters

While there is definitely going to be more characters introduced, we know that we will get to see Cable and that Domino will be an important character.

The after-credit scene of Deadpool did promise to show us Cable as a prominent character in the sequel.

So why all the fuss about him?

To put it as short and simple as possible, Cable (real name Nathan Summers) is a time-traveling super soldier from the future who is really, really badass. He is the son of Cyclops and comes packing powerful weapons and some powers of his own. While at first he and Deadpool started as enemies, they soon struck an unexpected partnership that worked really well for the readers. Not to drag on too much about Cable himself since loads would be easily written, we will just post a direct quote from the screenwritersDeadpool of Deadpool 2:

“So with Cable, he’s got such a convoluted past, and such a convoluted origin story that I think we’re going to try to leave that, not mysterious, but there are a lot of twists and turns, cloning and all this stuff where you go, ‘Oh my God. How do we get that across in a two-hour movie?’ I think we’re going to distil him down to his essence. It will be authentic and faithful, but it’s not going to include the 18,000 details… if you were going to read a Wikipedia page about Cable you’d roll your eyes.”

After all, who got the role?

After months of everybody trying to guess and filmmakers trying to get their perfect pick for the part, we finally know the actor that won the jackpot.

At first we heard that Brad Pitt, who is a serious fan of Deadpool, but then director David Leitch said that even though Pitt was interested, the most boring reason of all stopped him from doing Deadpool 2 – schedule conflicts. Who knows, maybe it’s good he didn’t take the role, we aren’t sure he would be able to pull off grey hair anyhow.

Russell Crowe was seriously interested in the role –  it all started when Rob Liefeld (comic artist who created the Deadpool and Cable characters) tweeted at Crowe, suggesting to him to read the role. Crowe responded, and even re-tweeted fan art to Ryan Reynolds picturing him as Cable (and it didn’t look bad at all). It all seemed to be going so well, and then nothing happened – we still have no idea why.

There have been rumors about Pierce Brosnan, Kyle Chandler, Steve Lang and many others, but the part went to Josh Brolin, who is apparently doubling down on Marvel roles as he took on the part of Thanos as well. All that is left is for Brolin to convince us that he is the perfect choice for the role since Russell Crowe has shown keen interest for the part!

Interestingly, Reynolds was REALLY not happy with the casting choice, he even tweeted “The fuck, Fox! You can’t play 2 characters in the same universe!! Josh Brolin was in Sicario and I was in Sabrina The Teenage Witch.”

We hope he was actually joking, because there is nothing worse for a movie than negative tension between actors.

What do you think of the casting choice?
