Pixar seem to be wondering what direction they need to take their production in next, as recently they have been revisiting some old ideas and considering sequels to various previous movies. There have been lots of rumors about “The Incredibles” getting a sequel, but nothing official was revealed until recently, when we finally got the news that the movie is underway.
The confirmation came from original director Brad Bird, who said that he has been hard at work writing the script for the sequel, but couldn’t give any specific details about what it would involve. So far, we only know that the director has been considering various different ideas for how the plot is going to play out, but he apparently hasn’t decided on anything specific yet. With that in mind, there are probably many different possibilities for how the plot is going to be developed and what we could see in the new film.
On the other hand, this also means that the rumors about the film’s plot which were circulating the Internet before the official revelation were most likely false. There were claims that the new film would be focused on Jack-Jack as he has been taken under the wing of a villain, about to become one himself – but if Brad Bird really is in such an early stage of writing the script, it’s not very likely that he’s managed to develop it that far already.
The director didn’t mention anything about those rumors, but it’s normal that he wouldn’t want to acknowledge them, given the low likelihood that they were true in the first place. And yet, by directly stating that the rumors are false, he would probably kill the hype surrounding the upcoming film to some extent, so it wouldn’t be a very smart move.
Hype is definitely something “The Incredibles 2” needs right now, because even though the original film was quite successful and popular, it was also noted as a bit underperforming in the box office, something which critics back then attributed to poor marketing by Disney/Pixar.
So the studio should definitely look into utilizing the Internet for their marketing and harvesting its full potential as a platform, because the landscape is a bit different nowadays compared to what it was like when the original film was released. It’s a lot easier to get noticed when using the Internet correctly, but it can also be easier to get lost in all the noise if one is not careful.
