Battlefield 5 Possibly Leaked, Documents Imply Near-Future Setting!

While fans of the “Battlefield” franchise have been arguing over whether the next game should be set in World War 1 or 2, a recent leak of design documents related to the game implies that the developers likely have something else in mind. There is of course no way to verify the legitimacy of the leak so fans should take it with a grain of salt, but the information does seem interesting and if it’s true, it could make “Battlefield 5” a great entry in the franchise.

The documents in question show information about the game’s planned DLCs, with some added hand-written comments, seemingly by a manager or director. Some of the comments point out things that should be changed, such as the names of packages/levels, as well as prompts the document writer to seek out alternatives for certain details.

What can fans expect to see in “Battlefield 5” if the documents are actually genuine? The first DLC will be titled “Eastern Front” and will take place in Eastern Europe, featuring a Russian invasion of Europe. The DLC will take players through various scenic cities, and it should have a more urban setting.

Other DLCs imply that the game will be set in the near future, such as “Prototype Warfare” which mentions the use of various prototype vehicles and gadgets, as well as “Titan Assault”. The latter is apparently going to be a revival of the popular “Titan Conquest” mode from a previous “Battlefield” game.

Since those two DLCs would only make sense if the game was set in the near future, this is the main theory among fans right now. For some, this is not really good news as they were hopeful to see a return to the original World War setting of the first “Battlefield” game. However, the shooter market has changed a lot in recent years – while WW1/2 games used to be quite popular around the time of “Battlefield: 1942” and “Call of Duty 2”, things are quite different now and players are more interested in modern games or ones set in the future.

This move would also make sense from the perspective of competing with “Call of Duty”. The two franchises have been racing against each other for popularity since they’ve existed, and while each has its own approach to its gameplay, they still share some similarities at their core. Recently, “Call of Duty” has moved into the near future itself, and there are rumors that the next game in that franchise is actually going to be in the far future, possibly even in space.

With that in mind, we expect EA to follow suit and release something similar with the next “Battlefield” game as well. It’s still not clear when the game is going to come out, but the leaked documents listed December 2016 for the release of certain DLCs, which implies that the main game itself should arrive a few months before that.

If that’s true, then EA will likely start releasing their first trailers soon. The company took a few hints from Activision about the importance of marketing in a franchise like that, and ever since “Battlefield 3”, we’ve seen some impressive trailers spearheading the release of each new game in the franchise. Some players actually enjoy following these trailers leading up to the release of the game, as they can be quality entertainment themselves. Previous “Battlefield” games also had a lot of marketing, but EA really stepped up their game after the third entry in the franchise.

  1. I’d be far happier with a near future war game than I would have been if it were World War I (which I would not have bought)

  2. What a load of bull. People are not more interested in shooters set in the future or “modern games” Why do you think Hardline took such a dive? People actually like old warfare just look at Bad company 2, BF3, BF4 – these games are great, Hardline was pretty average and every COD after MW2 and Black Ops 1 has been an absolute flop. I would love to hear where you got the idea that people like these games more than games based on WW1 and WW2. The shooter market hasn’t changed at all, there are different ideas sure, but one thing is for sure, futuristic shooters have been the biggest let down of the last 2 years which is why BF should return to WW1-WW2 style.
