The video game collection “Batman: Return to Arkham” is set to come out on the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 3, the Xbox One, and the Xbox 360 on October 18 but some gamers and enthusiasts have already been able to try out the gameplay walkthrough and features of the game.
“Batman: Return to Arkham” is a remastered version of the first two critically-acclaimed titles from the last generation – “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and “Batman: Arkham City.” It comes with fully remastered and updated visuals and also includes all of the DLCs for the two games.
It includes the comprehensive versions of both games too. “Batman: Arkham Asylum” exposes gamers to a dark and atmospheric adventure that takes them into the depths of Arkham Asylum, regarded as Gotham City’s security psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane, notes the PlayStation Blog.
On the other hand, “Batman: Arkham City” sends gamers soaring into Arkham City, a heavily fortified and sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City featuring classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe.
Game publisher Warner Bros Interactive announced that the two video games were remastered by game developer Virtuous using the Unreal 4 graphics engine, which is an improvement from the Unreal 3 engine used by the original games when it was released on the previous generation gaming consoles.
However, when one gaming critic compared the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 3 versions of “Batman: Return to Arkham,” he noted that the one on the previous generation gaming console looks fantastic than the one in the current generation gaming platform, notes Forbes.
The observant gaming critic noted that while there are certainly a lot of things that look better in the remastered version, most notably the fire and neon effects, he can’t really help but notice that the PS3 version looks nearly as good much of the time compared to the PS4 version.
He noted that the black tones are deeper and richer at times in the PS3 version whereas the PS4 version has a more brownish sheen to it. Even the faces are more detailed in the PS3.
Nothing new at all
But the same gaming critic said that it is nothing new to remastered versions of video games. He explained that past comparison videos have revealed much the same thing.
He attributes it to the fact that while the PS4 and the Xbox One are more powerful gaming platforms, and the Unreal Engine 4 is a more advanced engine than Unreal Engine 3, the outcomes still rely heavily on effort and resources.
He added that ideally, a remastered game version should look better across all categories and platforms without exception but “Batman: Return to Arkham” is a mixed bag, implying that there are also features in the game where the PS4 version is several notches better than the PS3 version.
It is not clear if a similar comparison has been made between the Xbox One version of “Batman: Return to Arkham” and the one on the Xbox 360.
A popular video game franchise
The “Batman: Arkham” series of action-adventure video games has been one of the most popular video game franchise around primarily because it features one of the most popular DC Comics superhero characters of all time, the Dark Knight no less.
Since 2009 when the first video game of the franchise, entitled “Batman: Arkham Asylum” came out developed by Rocksteady Studios, the series has churned in a total of four games, four portable game versions, a VR game version, and two game collections.
The two game collections of the franchise are “Batman: Arkham Bundle” and “Batman: Arkham Collection” which were both released back in 2013. A third game collection will be coming out on October 18 and it is going to be “Batman: Return to Arkham.”
