Veteran actress Sigourney Weaver played the character of Dr. Grace Augustine in “Avatar,” the most successful movie of all time.
Her character died in “Avatar” and she was not able to complete her transfer to being an Avatar herself which Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, did.
As early as last year, there have been reports that Sigourney Weaver shall return to “Avatar 2” and fans and critics were wondering how the sequel is going to handle it considering that her character has already died in the original film.
Critically-acclaimed producer, writer, and director James Cameron said that Sigourney Weaver can very well return to “Avatar 2” because nobody dies in a fictional film. In fact, along with Weaver, another actor, Stephen Lang, shall also be returning to the sequel despite his character, Col. Miles Quaritch, dying in the first film.
Latest rumors are now circulating that Sigourney Weaver shall return to “Avatar 2” no longer as Dr. Grace Augustine but as the main villain of the film.
In the first film, Dr. Augustine is an exobiologist spearheading the Avatar program. She led expeditions to get unobtanium and also served as Jake Sully’s mentor and pseudo diplomat to the Na’vi, notes Movie News Guide.
Cameron has yet to make an official statement regarding Weaver’s rumored new role in “Avatar 2” but it would be interesting to find out that if and when the actress gets a villain role, Stephen Lang might take the opposite and play one of the good guys.
However, all these are speculations pending the confirmation from Cameron or any of the cast members of “Avatar 2.”
Expressing his opinion on ‘Star Wars’ films
Meanwhile, James Cameron has recently offered his opinion regarding the direction of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
He said that he felt that George Lucas’ six films had more innovative visual imagination, while the one directed by JJ Abrams is more of a retrenchment to the things that fans and viewers had seen before.
Cameron added that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took a few baby steps forward with new characters. He said that the jury is out and that he wants to see where they go with it, reports Chatt Sports Net.
However, he refused to say further comment out his respect for Abrams and his good friend George Lucas.
Going up against ‘Star Wars’ is stupid
James Cameron has confirmed that he decided to push back the release of “Avatar 2” from December 2017 to December 2018 because he does not want the sequel to the most successful film in history to go up against “Star Wars: Episode 8.”
In a recent interview, Cameron said that his original plan was to release the four “Avatar” sequel a year apart but they decided to open that up.
He admitted that if for no other reasons, he just does not want to land on the same date as one of the “Star Wars” sequels.
Cameron added that he does not want to go head-to-head with “Star Wars” because that would be stupid. He said that he hopes that “Star Wars” also won’t go head-to-head with them.
“Avatar” may be the most successful film in history but “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which was shown in worldwide theaters in December last year, went on to become the third most successful movie of all time.
Thus, pitting “Avatar 2” and “Star Wars Episode 8” would not make sense at all since both films will be vying to become the most successful movie of all time and seeing them clash at the box office would really have a telling impact on their box-office results.
