Apple Watch Series 2 is Perceptibly Heavier and Clearly Thicker than its Predecessor, Says Critic

After being in the market for two months, a critic has turned in his review of the Apple Watch Series 2. While many are saying that the latest iteration to the smart wearable looks almost exactly like the first Apple Watch, he said that the Apple Watch Series 2 is perceptibly heavier.

The Apple Watch weighs approximately 25 grams whereas the Apple Watch Series 2 has a weight of 28.2 grams. In addition, the 42-mm stainless steel variant of the Apple Watch weighs 50 grams while the same version of the Apple Watch Series 2 is 52.4 grams, details Wired.

The Apple Watch Series 2 is also clearly thicker than its predecessor. The Apple Watch has a depth of 10.5 mm while the Apple Watch Series 2 has a thickness of 11.4 mm. A new ceramic version of the Apple Watch Series 2 is even thicker by 0.4 mm.

Overall, the critic says that the Apple Watch Series 2 is arguably bigger than the first iteration of the Apple Watch launched in March last year.

More space means more alteration

Because of the bigger size, the Apple Watch Series 2 also provided more space for its hardware underneath, which also means more alteration.

Possibly the most significant design alteration is that the Apple Watch Series 2 is water resistant. It has an impressive water depth of up to 50 meters.

The wearable’s IP67 rating is perhaps most impressive when the user considers the watch’s new speaker. Unlike the original Apple Watch speaker, which floods when underwater, the new version is designed to fill with water, then it vibrates to expel the excess water from the body.

Such ability, coupled with the automatic display shutoff so droplets don’t accidentally select screen options, that means the user can happily swim with his smartwatch without messing up the internal circuitry.

Apart from the waterproofing, the fact the stainless steel and ceramic cases get a sapphire crystal screen and the display is now twice as bright, the big news, of course, is the addition of GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2.

This means that the Apple Watch Series 2 can plot the user location without the need to slave to an iPhone. This means the user does not need to take his phone on runs, and it means the watch can plot also his open water swims.

In order for Apple to speed up the time for the initial GPS acquisition on the Apple Watch Series 2, Wi-Fi is used to get location data so the user iPhone knows approximately where he is. This is then fed to the watch so it doesn’t have to start from scratch once it is separated from the phone.

A legitimate fitness tracker

The Apple Watch Series 2 has been improved in nearly every way and is finally an all-in-one legitimate fitness tracker with the addition of GPS and water resistance.

This focus on pimping the fitness functionality coupled with the improved OS has made it a formidable wearable.

Not only is the Apple Watch a fashion accessory, it has actually improved productivity and the social life of its users. So an upgrade to the Apple Watch Series 2 for many has been well worth it.

Aside from a longer battery life, the Apple Watch Series 2 also has twice the brightness for its display screen when compared to the Apple Watch, notes CIO.

The American tech giant has turned its Apple Watch Series 2 into a serious fitness tracker after learning that the Apple Watch, which it released in April last year, was primarily being used by consumers for self-betterment of their health.

While the Apple Watch Series 2 remains a smartwatch in nature, Apple has utilized modern technology to turn it into a fitness device to serve as the consumers’ alternative for Fitbits, Jawbones, Garmins, Polars, and smart scales.

Apple learned that people will be shelling out money to pay for technology that promises an ironic escape from technology, even if it is only for 30-minute sweaty increments of time.
