Apple is one of the hottest companies in the mobile world right now and even though it just released two versions of the iPhone 6, the iPhone 5S is still quite popular. According to sources, the iPhone 5S was the second best selling iOS powered smartphone in the three months that ended in October. That accounts for about 26% of the iOS devices that were sold during that time. The iPhone 6 models accounted for about 33% of those sales, which is surprisingly close to the numbers for the iPhone 5S.
One factor that could point to the rise in sales for the iPhone 5S during this time was retailers putting it on sale expecting the iPhone 6 to be released around that time. This would boost sales for the older smartphone as users would be happy with any Apple iPhone model compared to the power users that picked up the brand new iPhone 6 models when they arrived. About three years ago it was the best thing in the world to have a smartphone with a larger display, but that trend is slowing.
Some sources are reporting that larger smartphones are just not for everyone. If you have big hands it might be something to consider. Another factor might be whether or not you have a tablet, or laptop that you can use besides your phone. If the phone is your tablet, the larger the display the better. Some think that Apple was pressured into releasing the larger iPhone 6 Plus this year because of the larger phones from Samsung and LG. Surprisingly, the iPhone 6 Plus only made up about 10% of the iPhone sales in the United States this through October.
Now that the busy holiday shopping season is underway, those numbers are expected to go up through the end of the year. The fact that the iPhone 5S is cheaper overall compared to the iPhone 6, could also lead to higher sales. If you are buying your first iPhone, the odds that you are paying for the model released last year are higher compared to paying for the brand new model. This puts more attention on the older model, increasing sales along the way.
If those that like smaller models from Apple, the company is likely to release a “mini” version of the iPhone just like other companies have been doing over the last 3 to 4 years. Apple has not confirmed a “mini” version, but they are going to follow trends if there is one. As previously mentioned, the sales for the iPhone 6 are expected to rise and that is going to put a different on the spin compared to what we see now.
