Fans will be seeing less of The CW’s “iZombie” when the show returns for its third season. Showrunner Rob Thomas confirmed that the upcoming installment of the comedy drama will only have 13 episodes.
In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Thomas reveals that the 13-episode order will actually make it easier for the writers to plan out the show.
Thomas adds that during the pilot season, the show was given 13 episodes and then was expanded to 19 in the second season. The writers actually jammed nine episodes worth in the last six and that was really difficult for them.
The executive producer reveals that having fewer episodes in the upcoming season shouldn’t worry fans about the show’s status. He says that it will actually help the show in terms of story development.
Meanwhile, Season 3 will see Rahul Kohli’s Ravi proceed on working on a cure for the zombie virus. However, none of Ravi’s experiment will be deemed successful in the upcoming season.
In fact, producers say that as long the show stays on the air, there will be no zombie cure in sight. This was confirmed by the cast of the show during last month’s San Diego ComicCon panel.
Cast members say that Ravi’s medical developments are bound to fail because when a cure is found then that will spell trouble for the series. Say Ravi found a cure, then there will be no more zombies to chase after, thus no more stories to tell.
However, viewers can expect the doctor to have minimal success but more devastating side effects in his search for a cure.
As for David Anders’ Blaine, fans are still suspecting if he really has amnesia. Blaine took Ravi’s untested zombie cure in Season 2 that gave him a partial memory loss.
However, with Blaine’s reputation of deception, some viewers say that he’s just being his natural trickster and did not really lose some of his memories.
During the show’s panel at ComicCon, Anders was asked if his character is just pretending to have amnesia or not. It turns out that the actor himself doesn’t know what the truth is.
The “Alias” alum says that he doesn’t have a clue if Blaine is faking it or not but he’s glad the producers haven’t told him yet so he could play the truth to it.
He adds that he wants Blaine to recover some of his memories back. He says that he misses the old Blaine who’s witty, snappy, and funny because this new Blaine is just blank and feels lost in the woods. Despite this, Anders admits that he enjoys playing the new version of Blaine.
When asked about what fans should expect for the third season, Kohli says that Season 3 takes place literally minutes after the events of the Season 2 finale.
Kohli adds that it’s a direct continuation from where they left off so there’s no procedural element in the season premiere. This creates the notion that the show will turn into a full-fledged serialized show.
Earlier this March, lead star Rose McIver, who plays Liv Moore says that now that The CW series is making its way to its third season, there’s more room to shake the show’s structure and play outside the box.
The 27-year-old actress says that the procedural aspects will always be an integral premise of the program. She says that there are great things with the procedural device of Liv eating brains each week to open story hooks that fans will enjoy.
The New Zealand native adds that story-wise, relationship-wise, and character dynamic-wise, there’s a lot of stuff coming up.
As per Parent Herald, Liv will eat the brain of a dominatrix next season. She and Robert Buckley’s Major will also eat the brains of a father and daughter with Liv eating the father’s and Major eating the daughter’s brain.
