‘Sleepy Hollow’ Season 4 Showrunner Says Death of Abbie Mills a Poignant Conclusion for the Character!

The reason why the American supernatural drama series “Sleepy Hollow” has been a viral topic online since its Season 3 finale in May is because it killed off its main female character Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie.

Abbie Mills sacrificed herself during the Season 3 finale of “Sleepy Hollow” that aired on Fox in May as one of the two Witnesses to be able to defeat the Hidden One.

The death of Abbie also sparked controversy since Nicole Beharie is a character of color and that some are alluding that it could be an issue of racial discrimination.

But the producers and showrunner denied that the death of Abbie Mills is an issue of color. In fact, showrunner Cliffton Campbell said in a recent interview that the death of Abbie Mills is a poignant conclusion for the character in “Sleepy Hollow,” reports the Ecumenical News.

Campbell’s statement sort of quashed speculations that Abbie Mills might return for Season 4 of “Sleepy Hollow” since the TV series is known for bringing dead characters back to life.

The executive producer also said that they thanked Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie Mills and “Sleepy Hollow” to life. He added that they are currently discussing Season 4 and should the TV series be picked up for another season, they promised to deliver more exciting scenarios and new avenues to explore.

Confident of Abbie Mills’ return

However, many critics and fans of the TV series are confident that Abbie Mills shall return to “Sleepy Hollow” Season 4 because the story cannot proceed with only one Witness in Ichabod Crane, played by Tom Mison.

Based on the prophecy, there have to be two Witnesses to defeat the evil that besets Sleepy Hollow and the world per se so it very likely that Abbie Mills shall return regardless of whatever form, either as a new character or even someone who suddenly wakes up from the dead.

In addition, shippers of ‘Ichabbie’ are confident that the show could not survive without Abbie and just have Ichabod going solo, notes Hall of Fame Magazine.

Their obvious on-cam chemistry is very evident since the first season of “Sleepy Hollow” and it has been one of the reasons why the show enjoyed good ratings, at least during its first season.

In a recent interview, Tom Mison also said that he does not see his character Ichabod as the lead protagonist in the TV series but a mere sidekick to Nicole Beharie’s Abbie.

The statement actually sparked speculations that the actor was hinting of the likely return of Abbie Mills in the upcoming fourth season of “Sleepy Hollow.” However, the answer to these speculations shall remain as the show’s best-kept secret until the return of “Sleepy Hollow” to the small screen in the fall of this year for its fourth season.

No news means good news

After the Season 3 finale of “Sleepy Hollow,” there have been no reports about Nicole Beharie ending her contract with the show or that she was moving on to another TV series. It was reported in April that she will be co-starring with Jesse Williams, one of the series regulars of “Grey’s Anatomy,” and Michael Ealy in the re-imagining of the 1990 thriller “Jacob’s Ladder.”

But that was just about it for Beharie which led some critics to believe that the death of Abbie Mills in the Season 3 finale of “Sleepy Hollow” is like the death of Jon Snow during the Season 5 finale of “Game of Thrones” last year.

The death of Jon Snow and his impending resurrection was the most widely-talked about issue on the internet for a full year. “Game of Thrones” reaped the dividends of the cliffhanger especially with its very successful Season 6 finale late last month.
